Hey everyone, I’m stressing out about a few things. Maybe someone can help me.

I’m in a dance class at my college (it’s ballroom dance), and the instructor told me that he is not sure whether he is doing things in accordance with copyright laws. He does not have any particular license or permit from any copyright organizations.

Furthermore, he is going to have a dance party for the class (and all his other classes) which will be open to the public and will charge for tickets.

Both situations uses music on CD’s. No DJ’s or bands.

First off, anyone know whether these situations break copyright laws? I heard that educational purposes are sometimes exempted, so perhaps the class is ok.

However, if they are indeed wrong…

Must I stop going to class rather than going and using the questionable music? I’m certainly willing if it is God’s will, but i honestly don’t want to because it would hurt my grade severely (unless i managed to get a withdrawal).

Second, should I not go to the party in order to avoid these things?

thank you for your time.

I don’t think it’s your responsibility to make sure the instructor is doing everything he’s suppose to do. I say enjoy the class and don’t worry about it.

I’m assuming you’re a fulltime student paying a fixed rate here. As the previous poster stated, you are not responsible for the acts of others. However, it would be good for him to be sure he’s within copyright laws. I’ll ask at my studio tomorrow and see if the local owner knows what is required…

I’m an elementary (K-5) music teacher. As the music is purchased legally, I have the right to use the CDs in my classroom for educational purposes, such as teaching dances, which I do regularly.

I cannot say anything about the public parties or dances. I’m not that familiar with that aspect of the law.

If he is breaking the copyright law, you are not. It would all be his responsibility.
If you wonder if he is breaking the copyright law, you could go to your local library and ask for a guide for the copyright law. However, any violation of it would not be your responsibility. If you check such a guide, you would see that any violation of the copyright law would only have to do with your teacher.

What he does has as far as Copyright goes has nothing to do with you.

The owner of the business where the party is being held needs to have a License not the teacher or anyone going to the party.

I am basing this on a Bar that has live entertainment. The Bar owner must have a License not the Band that plays there.
