Copyright Scruples

I am scrupulous, and ran into numerous copyright infringement threads. I don’t see myself guilty of illegal downloads/watching movies online, but I’m now worried about how I should handle YouTube(if it helps, I mainly listen to songs/watch short clips of shows/amvs). Advice?

Watching videos on Youtube is not something to worry about regarding copyright law. Most videos on Youtube are there with the permission of the copyright holder. If not, it is the copyright holder’s right and responsibility to request that it be taken down.

A lot of Youtube videos are morally objectionable for one reason or another, e.g. vulgarity, but that is another issue.

One thing you could do this is to make sure you always click into the video posted by the copyright holder, if it’s available. With music, this is often the case and it’s usually obvious.

I used to do the copyright removals for a Christian music label, so I’m always thinking about this.

For example, if I go to YouTube and search for I Am by Theocracy (one of my favorite Christian bands), the first entry says it’s from Ulterium Records, while the rest are all obviously not affiliated with the label. That way the label gets the advertising credit (if they are running ads) and that works its way back to the band.

This bolded part(bolded by me) is the part I’m scrupulous on. What if I want to listen to a remix(Nightcore) of the same song? What if it isn’t available/obvious? (Also, what if it doesn’t have ads?)

Thanks for the post, though. I’m not in the habit of doing the above(when possible), but I definitely should, and will try to.

I’ll keep my comments limited to music since that’s what I mostly spend my time on when we’re talking about YouTube (and it’s my primary way to check out new music). If there’s no label-provided version available, then I guess I break it down into two categories:

• if it’s something I’m just listening to a few times or very sporadically, then I just listen to the non-official versions on YouTube; if an official one was available, I’d use it; I guess I feel like I’ve done what I can to legitimize my listening
• if it’s something I want to listen to a lot, I will go out of my way to purchase it legally so the band/label get paid

I asked my priest about the matter, and I’ll follow his advice instead of worrying about this thread. Thanks for the advice though, I appreciate the effort.
