I recently acquired a white Cord of St. Joseph and a Brown Scapular of OLMC in the mail, and I strongly desire to start using them. I initially sought to wear them as a milder penance than something like the Opus Dei cilice, and then came across the more active spirituality associated with each.

The cord. Do I have to have it blessed by a priest, and blessed with holy water? If the priest blesses it in his office, may I just sprinkle holy water on it later? I want to do this right, but at the same time I assume all this is secondary to the spirit of devotion to God and St. Joseph.

The Brown Scapular. Do I have to do the investiture, or may I just begin wearing it? Also, how do I find a Benedictine priest to apply the exorcism blessing to the St. Benedict medal?

Thanks in advance.

If im wrong then Im sorry, but Ive had Scapulars and St Benedict medals blessed by the first Priest I come in contact with. They do simple blessings to the medals and im fine with that. I have faith that God sees these blessings, the same as if it were blessed the “proper” way. No Priest has ever told me no just because they didnt have the right prayer that is attached to a specific medal or Scapular. Just my opinion, God Bless.

Ps: i love these forums that allow us to have these type of discussions.

One more thought… I once read that God forgives us for our sins, even as we are comitting them, knowing that we will repent. Not sure how true that is, but if it is, will he bless our Medals and Scapulars before we even ask, because He already knows our intention of having them blessed? Kinda interesting thought…

Thanks in advance.
The St. Benedict medal does not have to be blessed by a Benededictine, any priest can do it if they follow the certian blessing osb.org/gen/medal.html#blessing (it’s on this website). I reccomend getting enrolled in the Brown Scapular. It leaves the blessing on your soul, so you can wear scapulars and not have to get others re-blessed, if you are enrolled in the scapular and pray the rosary daily with good faith you will bascially get anything you ask Our Lady for, and it puts you in a worldwide group of the faithful who pray for each other.

Sorry, I’m not familiar with the Cord of St. Joseph

Hi,
Ave Maria,

The cord has to be blessed in a special way by a priest. I have one on right now, it is a beautiful devotion, promising to preserve your chastity. And it is SO POWERFUL!!! For more info PM me. You have to say a special prayer and seven Gloria Patri(Glory Be)s each day.
