Cornell started requiring flu immunizations this academic year for all students “studying in Ithaca” – not just those attending classes in person – enforced through the Behavioral Compact.
We recognize that, due to longstanding systemic racism and health inequities in this country, i> ndividuals from some marginalized communities may have concerns about needing to agree to such requirements. For example, historically, the bodies the of Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) have been mistreated, and used by people in power, sometimes for profit or medical gain. It is understandable that the current Compact requirements may feel suspect or even exploitative to some BIPOC members of the Cornell community. Additionally, recent acts of violence against Black people by law enforcement may contribute to feelings of distrust or powerlessness.

While the university “strongly recommend” that nonwhite students comply voluntarily, because “long-standing social inequalities and health disparities have resulted in COVID-19 disproportionately affecting BIPOC individuals,” they will be granted an exemption if they cite their racial identity.

So what is this about? I thought it was voluntary.

Cornell wants it’s white privileged types protected.

Cornell has been in news last year about racist problems.

This does not help their image.

We know this history and validate the potential concerns it may raise. At the same time, we know that long-standing social inequalities and health disparities have resulted in COVID-19 disproportionately affecting BIPOC individuals. Higher percentages of individuals from these communities become infected with COVID, and the health outcomes related to infection are often more serious. Away from campus community, BIPOC individuals are not as likely to have access to preventive services or quality health care. The systems, services, and policies being implemented at Cornell seek to address these inequalities as well as the differential impacts.
DAMAGE CONTROL.

Too late it is all over the internet now.

To be fair, the article uses selective quotations marks. In what you quote first, what is in quotation marks is from the Cornell policy, the text not in quotation makes is extrapolation and inferences made by the author of the article.

In any event, the statements do seem odd. I’ve never seen or met a non-white anti-vaxxer.

Still Cornell has had some racist issues last year. This does not help their profile image.

Why would they make this shot mandatory for anyone? Just put out notices.

I hope this is not the future for colleges,.

There have big issues over the HPV virus shot being mandatory.

Many public and private schools (including Catholic schools) already make the flu shot mandatory. It was only a matter of time for colleges to start including it in their slate of mandatory vaccines.

You are going to find out how mandatory this is going to be.

Airlines were the first to propose that you have a certificate of vaccination once the vaccine is readily available.

Now there is article here saying Companies have the legal right “No Vaccine, Your Fired” And in the Right to Work States where you work for the PLEASURE of your boss, guess what.

I think the headline of this thread is wrong–the policy seems to be about the flu shot (not sure why disparities with Covid were discussed within it). But I’m sure we’re going to see mandatory Covid vaccines in school like other vaccines.

It’ll be interesting to see if it extends to workplaces and elsewhere (I don’t believe there are such requirements elsewhere today).

The Ivy League school offers a race-based exemption from its new mandatory flu shot
New mandatory flu shot requirement, so what is this about?

“The aforementioned inequities and injustices may lead some individuals to have reservations about testing and immunization, yet it is also important to acknowledge the critical role these measures play in protecting community health and well-being. In fact, they are likely to be especially helpful for BIPOC communities. For example, annual influenza vaccination is recommended for every individual 6 months or older who does not have medical contraindications, as it is the best way to help protect against flu. The vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations, and flu-related deaths. Those who get the vaccine not only protect themselves, but also the people around them who may be more vulnerable to serious flu illness, including infants, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions. They are designed to help students stay safe, and they are part of the quality health care students can access while on campus. We strongly recommend that students comply with these requirements. At the same time, we understand that someone may know the science and still feel distrusting of health care and may have addition questions.”

Translation: POC have many valid reasons to question and distrust the American government and medical system, but it’s still in their best interest in this instance to get vaccinated.

Goodness, the way rightwing media twists perfectly reasonable positions is sickening. It’s amazing how they create white outrage and fears out of nothing.

There are some ugly stains in USA’s history on alleged vitamin shots and the like prescribed to minorities. That has eroded a good bit of trust.
