Hi everyone,

I was reading about the rosary today and found out that I didn’t know what the coronation of Mary is. I have a vague idea that goes along the lines of this: After Mary was assumed into Heaven she was crowned as the Queen of Heaven. Am I right? Please correct me if I’m way off. If my idea is true, what does it mean to be the Queen of Heaven? All help is appreciated! Thanks!

It is a way of expressing that Mary is the Mother of the King. In the old Testament we find that the Queen is not the Kings wife because the King many times had several wives. Instead the Queen is the Kings mother. She sits at His right hand and has His ear so to speak.

Hi, Zach.

You got it. Except she was crowned as Queen of Heaven and earth (don’t forget earth). She is our Queen, too. 😃

I didn’t know what the coronation of Mary is.
A coronation is a crowning ceremony (from the Latin root word “corōna,” meaning “crown”).

In the Bible, Mary is described as wearing a “crown of twelve stars:”
And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.
Rev 12:1
This is why Mary is often depicted wearing such a crown, or with a halo containing 12 stars. For example:

The coronation itself is often depicted by artists in a scene such as this:
