Corporation of Scientology suing Daughters of St. Paul?

Scientology appears to be suing Italian Catholic Maria Pia Gardini, who is a former Scientologist, and the Daughters of St. Paul, who’s publishing house printed her book detailing the abuses of the “Church” of Scientology by sharing the true experiences of numerous former Scientologists.

It was only just released in December, but it can’t hurt to ask if any of you Italian speakers out there had a chance to read her book (I miei anni in Scientology (My years in Scientology))? If so, what did you think of it? I’ll have to wait for an English translation (or go learn Italian) before I can read it.

Do you, like me, feel the Daughters of St. Paul are doing the right thing by publishing works undressing dangerous organizations such as Scientology, or do you, like the CoS, think they should stick to publishing on Catholic topics?

I don’t make a habit of defaming other people’s faiths, but when I hear about forced abortions, coercive solicitation of donations, forced labor camps (RPF), and doctrines/dogma which breaks up families (“Disconnection” and PTS/SP Tech) alarm bells start going off.

Please let me know what you think. I don’t think the Sisters will have any problem getting this case thrown out of Italian courts, but this is, IMHO, a very interesting story.

I would hesitate to claim that joining Scientology means one is stupid. I know lots of intelligent people who are or were members of the organization. Scientology actually seems to be aimed at those with above average intelligence, but perhaps lacking in education and knowledge of what science and the scientific method really mean.

I would also not say that necessarily one must be “defective” psychologically to join, although the fact is anyone who joins any group is in some way “psychologically predisposed” to said group, or perhaps to any group.

What I understand is his wife wants to raise their daughter as a Catholic. That seems to be one of the reasons behind their marital troubles of late.

If the author has included copious notes that can substantiate her allegations, then there is nothing Scientology can do to her or the Daughters of Saint Paul. Scientology is not highly regarded in Italy, by the way. It will probably get thrown out.

I never said or implied that Tom Cruise was one of the intelligent people I know who are or have been in Scientology. I assume he is slightly above the average for intelligence, but if you look at his background, he has little or no education.

Tom Cruise’s lack of education made him vulnerable to the pseudo-scientific language and claims of LRH when Tom was young, and added to this was the trust they generated by helping his career early on. Now, after years and years of indoctrination and “processing” he is firmly in the mindset of the cult and unwilling to even consider the scientific reality that Scientology and Dianetics have both been completely unable to demonstrate the results they promise.

I don’t know Tom, never met him, so I’m not going to insult his intelligence. He is a victim of Scientology, albeit a victim who now victimizes others by shilling for Scientology. I sincerely hope he one day wakes up and leaves it.

The way I see it, if they win this case, the Catholic Church should sue Dan Brown et al.

In most court systems it still costs an incredible amount to defend oneself.

Obviously new fad religions (and small “cultish” faiths) are the most difficult to support from an intellectual standpoint, but of course all religions suffer from this fault. Nonetheless, there’s a few out there set the gold standard for stupidity – and scientology is one of them 🙂

I crack up even thinking about scientology!
