I’m experiencing bad physical pain at the moment and will do for another month until I have surgery.
I’m saying the morning offering prayer each day in order to ‘offer up’ my pain.
Sometimes I just say something like “I offer this to you Jesus”.

Am I doing this correct? Or should I be doing something else or a bit differently?

Thanks,
  • Rose.

Dear Rose,

You’re doing just fine. Offering something to God is an act of will; you simply will it. It’s a good idea, though, to use words, because it fixes the act in our minds. It is perfectly fine to use your own words. A traditional morning offering (like the one in the Baltimore Catechism) surely has advantages; we can trust it is theologically sound, and it usually covers all the bases. But if you are offering something up spontaneously throughout the day, it is fine to say something simple such as you have been doing, or even simply to think it.

The saints also recommend offering things up through our Lady, because she presents it to her Son in a way more pleasing to Him. So you could offer it to her and leave it at that; or you could say, “My Jesus, I offer this to you through the intercession of your Holy Mother,” or some such thing, if you choose this form of devotion.

Thank you!

I just like to add the phrase “in union with your Cross” (or Passion), because it is in uniting our suffering to Christ’s that they actually gain redemptive value. And yeah, offering them though Our Lady is a nice touch, too.

Jesus bless you, my friend.

Ah yes, will do. Thank you!

I’m sorry to hear of your pain and inspired that you are offering it up to God. What a wonderful idea! God knows the content of your heart and understands more perfectly what you are trying to say. You’re doing it exactly as you should. God’s Peace be with you and my prayers for your successful surgery.

I hope you don’t mind Blue_Rose if I share with you some things that I believe may help you (I apologise in advance for the length), but before I start, Id like to just say that when it comes to pain and suffering, I don’t consider myself the least bit qualified or authoritative on the matter, Lord knows that when the cross lands on me all I can think about is begging Him for relief. But I believe when pain is to be endured, a little courage helps more than much knowledge, a little human sympathy more than much courage and I believe the least tincture of the love of God more than all.

**10) I assure you that those who meditate on My sorrowful Passion will derive many Graces, because it is a treasure chest of infinitely enormous benefits.
  1. If you keep Me company while meditating on My Passion, I will make smooth your hardships, because as I have said, I always repay love with Love.**
Jesus to Catalina:
The Passion - loveandmercy.org/Eng-TP-Reg.pdf

**1) …Look at Me, My beloved ones. Letting Myself be led with the meekness of a lamb to the terrible torture of the scourging. On My Body, already covered with blows and overwhelmed with fatigue, the executioners cruelly discharge terrible lashes with braided rope, with rods. They punish Me so violently that there was no part of Me which was not prey to the most terrible pain… The blows and the kicks caused Me countless wounds… The rods tore away pieces of My skin and flesh. Blood flowed from all My limbs. Time after time I fell because of the pain caused by the blows to My manliness. My Body was in such a state that I resembled a monster more than a man. The features of My face had lost their shape; it was all swollen.
  1. The thought of so many souls, who would later be inspired to follow My footsteps, consumed Me with Love.**
From His Cross He could see all of His faithful imitators, He saw each one of us who love would conquer, who would be inspired by His passion to follow Him, He saw all that His cross would accomplish (Including helping other souls carry their crosses by using His as the example) and this consumed Him with love.
Jesus to Catalina:
The Passion - loveandmercy.org/Eng-TP-Reg.pdf

**2) When the arms of those cruel men were exhausted by the violence of discharging blows against My Body, they placed upon My head a crown woven with branches of thorns, and parading before Me they said: “So you are a King? We salute you!”
  1. Some spat at Me; others insulted Me; still others dealt further blows to My head, each one adding a new pain to My Body, so battered and destroyed.
  2. I am tired; I have nowhere to rest. Lend Me your heart and your arms to cover Myself in your love. I am cold and feverish; embrace Me for an instant before they continue destroying this temple of Love. **
Jesus to Catalina:
The Passion - loveandmercy.org/Eng-TP-Reg.pdf

**5) The fatigue that I feel is so great and the Cross so heavy that halfway along the path, I fall from weakness. See how those inhuman men lift Me up in the most brutal manner. One grabs My arm, another pulls My clothes that are stuck to My wounds, tearing them open again… This one grabs Me by the neck, another by the hair; others discharge dreadful blows to My whole Body, with their fists, and even with their feet. The Cross falls upon Me and with its weight causes new wounds. My face is scraped by the stones in the road and the blood which runs down My face sticks to My eyes that are almost closed because of the blows they have received. The dust and the mud mingle with the blood and I am turned into the most repugnant of objects.
  1. My Father sends Angels to help support Me so that My Body does not lose consciousness when it falls, so that the battle may not be won before its time and all My souls are lost.
  2. I walk over the stones that destroy My feet. I stumble and fall time and time again. I look at both sides of the road, searching for the slightest look of love, of surrender, of union with My pain, but… I do not see anyone.
  3. My children, you who follow in My footsteps, do not let go of your cross no matter how heavy it seems to you. Do it for Me because by carrying your cross, you will help Me carry Mine, and on the difficult path, you will find My Mother and the holy souls who will give you encouragement and comfort.**
I believe those who carry their crosses out of the love inspired in them by the vision of what Christ has suffered for us, they in turn inspired and thus helped Christ to carry His cross that would redeem all of mankind. Thus why they are co-redeemers with Christ, and thus why those who share in the Cross of Christ also share in His glory.

**1) Look with what cruelty these hardened men surround Me. Some pull the Cross and lay it on the ground; others tear off My clothes that adhere to the wounds that again open and blood again oozes out.
  1. Look, beloved children, at how much shame and confusion I suffer seeing Myself this way before that immense crowd… What sorrow for My soul!
  2. But the hour has arrived and the executioners stretching Me out upon the Cross, grab My arms and pull them until they reach the holes prepared in it. My whole Body is breaking; it swings from one side to the other and the thorns of the crown penetrate even deeper into My head. Listen to the first blow of the hammer that nails My right hand… It resounds to the depths of the earth. Listen yet again… now they are nailing My left hand and, in the presence of such a spectacle, the heavens tremble, and the Angels prostrate themselves. I keep the most profound silence. Neither a complaint, nor a moan escapes My lips, but My tears mingle with the blood that covers My face.
  3. After they have nailed My hands, they cruelly pull My feet… My wounds open, the nerves in My hands and arms tear; the bones are dislocated… The pain is intense!
  4. My feet are pierced and My Blood soaks the earth!… **

"Contemplate for a moment these bloodstained hands and feet… This naked body, covered with wounds, with urine, and blood. Dirty… This head punctured by sharp thorns, soaked in sweat, full of dust, and covered in Blood…

"Contemplate your Jesus, hanging on the Cross, without being able to make the slightest movement… naked, without fame, without honor, without liberty…

**To redeem all of mankind, a child’s cry, a moan, a single tear of Mine would have been enough… Would you have understood My Love in the same way? If with so many great proofs you still take so long to accept it, what would have caused you to believe in My Love, if I had limited Myself to what seemed paltry? …

It is because of all this that you must believe in Love, principally, in My Love …

Only by going beyond the limit of “what is necessary” would many eyes be opened to My Love.**

**4) "…In this profound pain which causes My sight to grow darker to the point that I can no longer see clearly those beings which I love and who remain at the foot of My agony, I know that Love has conquered, that it will conquer forever. **
“And I saw the river over which every soul must pass to reach the kingdom of Heaven. And the name of that river was suffering… And I saw the boat which carries souls across the river. And the name of that boat was Love.” - St John of the Cross

“Suffering without love is unendurable… love without suffering is mere words/feelings … Suffering united with love transforms it into a loving sacrifice, into Christ’s Cross.” - Scott Hahn

“When suffering is accepted with love, it is no longer suffering, but it is changed into joy.” - St. Therese

**10) “…you can see and understand with greater ease, why human suffering makes sense when it is endured for love’s sake, desiring to fulfill the Divine Will. And it is that the greatest pain, as intense as it may be, does not diminish the joy in the heart of those who sweeten themselves with the greatest Love.”
…
  1. “It is precisely because of that boundless love which, in the midst of My unfathomable suffering, I did not lose confidence in My Father. But rather, I was being overcome by immense joy in knowing that I was fulfilling His Will and, thus, demonstrating My Love for Him and for all mankind.”**

Luke 23:26-43 - Jesus is Nailed to a Cross
Jesus to Catalina:
From Sinai to Calvary - loveandmercy.org/Eng-FSC-Reg.pdf

**Observe these two condemned ones who flank Me and meditate on the ways that men carry their crosses. 8) “Some carry it with rage, with bitterness, amidst much grief. He who carries a cross in similar circumstances and with those sentiments, carries for sure a cross, which has no sense because instead of drawing him closer, it pushes him away from Me. Usually that is the cross of those who refuse to understand the meaning of suffering, which takes on supernatural dimensions. That is the cross of the thief at My left, it is the cross which will always be heavy and will never be able to redeem.
  1. “Dismas, on My right, accepts his cross with resignation and even with dignity; he assumes it at first because he has no other recourse. But suddenly, when he recognizes Me and knows that I Am the Son of God, he accepts that cross, acknowledging himself as a sinner, and asking that through it, Mercy remembers him. 10) “Finally, you have Me here in front of you, embracing My redeeming Cross to teach all of you to carry yours. I invite you to be co-redeemers with Me, making reparation for your own sins and those of all mankind. Know that this way of carrying the cross is reflected in your conduct, when before you are difficulties and pains and through them you draw closer to Me and you profit from them to give testimony before men. When you embrace your cross, you can feel that the only thing you desire is strength, because the thirst for souls consumes you."**
Jesus to Catalina:
The Passion - loveandmercy.org/Eng-TP-Reg.pdf

**17) My children, there are no glorious crosses on earth; they are all wrapped in mystery, in darkness, in exasperation: in mystery, because you do not understand it; in darkness, because they blind the mind; and in exasperation, because they strike blows in precisely those places where one does not wish to be struck.
  1. …I tell you that not only did I carry the wooden cross that led Me to Glory, but, above all, that invisible but permanent Cross that was formed by the crosses of your sins. Yes, and of your sufferings. Everything that you suffer was the object of My sorrows, for I not only suffered to give you Redemption, but also for what you should suffer now. Look at the love that unites Me to you; in it have the confirmation of My Holy Will and unite yourselves to Me by observing how I behaved in the midst of unlimited bitterness.
  2. I have taken as a symbol a piece of wood, a cross. I have carried it with great love, for the good of all. I have suffered real affliction so that all could rejoice in Me. But today, how many believe in the One who truly did love you and does love you? Contemplate Me in the image of the Christ that weeps and bleeds. There and in this way the world has Me.**
Jesus to Catalina:
The Passion - loveandmercy.org/Eng-TP-Reg.pdf

**6) …there are souls, and not few, who, moved by their desire for salvation but above all, by the love inspired in them by the vision of what I have suffered for them, decide to follow Me on the path to Calvary. They embrace the perfect life and give themselves to My service, not to help Me carry just a part of the Cross but all of it. Their only desire is to give Me rest and to console Me. For that purpose, they volunteer for everything that My Will asks of them, searching for how they can please Me. They do not think about the merits or the reward that awaits them, or the tiredness or the suffering that will result for them. The only thing that they have in mind is the love that they can show Me, and the comfort they give Me…
  1. If My Cross is presented as an illness, if it is hidden under a job contrary to their inclinations and of little agreement with their abilities, if it comes accompanied by the thoughtlessness of people surround them, they accept it with total submission.
  2. Oh! These are the souls that truly carry My Cross; they adore it. They make use of it for obtaining My Glory with no interest or payment other than My love. They are the ones that consider Me and glorify Me.
  3. If you do not see the result of your sufferings, of your self-denial, or if you see it later, be certain that they have not been in vain and fruitless but, on the contrary, the fruit will be abundant.
  4. The soul who truly loves, does not keep count of how much it has suffered or labored, nor does it expect this or that reward, but it seeks only that which it believes glorifies its God… For Him it spares neither labors nor weariness. It does not become agitated or restless, far from it, for it does not lose its peace if it finds itself thwarted or humiliated, because the only motive for its actions is love, and love abandons the consequences and the results. Therein lies the purpose of souls who do not seek rewards. The only thing that they hope for is My Glory, My comfort, My rest, and, for that reason they have taken My Cross and all the weight that My Will desires to place upon them.
  5. My children, call Me by My name, for Jesus means everything. I will wash your feet, those feet that have trodden a slippery path and are now wounded by the blows against the rocks. I will wipe away your tears, cure you, kiss you, and you will remain healthy and know no other path but the one that leads you to Me.**

Divine Providence - loveandmercy.org/Eng-DP-Reg.pdf

During my prayers on the 23rd, the Lord, knowing that I was feeling very much alone, spoke to me and said: **2) “My beloved, here I am, responding to your call. However, not even for an instant have I abandoned you… You are seemingly alone but I am with you. 3) “Think of My anguish in the garden; I felt alone. 4) “Are you afraid? So was I. 5) “Do you need to talk to someone? Talk to Me. 6) “Do you need a hand to caress you? Here are Mine. 7) “Do you need a shoulder on which to cry? Do so on Mine and I will dry your tears with My kisses… Your tears will blend with Mine. I am not indifferent to your sufferings.
  1. “Do you need someone’s company to pray with you? Here you have My Saints and My Angels… Offer Me your patience in this life of exile and, thus, each time that I come looking for you, you will be free of grief and able to enjoy great interior peace.**
Jesus to Catalina:
Divine Providence - loveandmercy.org/Eng-DP-Reg.pdf

On the 29th day the Lord told me: **“Gold is tested in the burning crucible. Everything that all of you are living is necessary for growth… I love you very much. Believe it and love Me more. Even if you think that you are incapable of loving more, continue to exert yourself in that for love is like a rubber container that expands, with the only difference being that the container never explodes, it is refined until it becomes noble material.” **
  1. Later He continued: **4) “My desire is for every soul to be holy so it may come to Me at the moment of its death and remain in the Kingdom that the Father has prepared for it from all eternity. However, I desire to purify that soul even on earth, so that, as much as possible, it not be necessary to purge that which remained to be cleansed in life. That is why when a person is well disposed and desires to know Me, to love Me, to make Me known and to be purified on earth, I do my work as a potter and shape that clay, sometimes adding some more water to refine the mass, other times hitting or squeezing the mass to soften it, and when it is ready, I cook it in the burning oven of the virtues, in order to make that piece soft to the touch, shiny and worthy to be presented and offered to a King.” **
  2. Even though I was certain of having seen my mother’s journey towards the Throne of the Lord, I kept wondering if her soul had to expiate for a time in Purgatory… It was then that the Lord told me: **6) “Why do you allow the devil to sow doubts in your mind? Trust and pray… None of you will understand until you are on this side, but even if you are almost certain (as I have revealed to certain souls) that your deceased ones are already enjoying Paradise, continue praying for them because in this way you complete what they lacked or increase what the souls of other persons close to you presented in their hands when they appeared before Me. 7) “When I said, ‘Come to Me all you who are burdened or tired…’ I also said it to you. Many things, which I allow or send, you sometimes find silly or unjust. Faith has to teach all of you that I plan everything for good. Remember that the soul, who maintains its peace and faith in the face of adversity, has the right to expect My Love and its benefits.” **
2 Corinthians 12:8-10:
8 Three times I begged the Lord to make this suffering go away. 9 But he replied, “My kindness is all you need. My power is strongest when you are weak.” So if Christ keeps giving me his power, I will gladly brag about how weak I am. 10 Yes, I am glad to be weak or insulted or mistreated or to have troubles and sufferings, if it is for Christ. Because when I am weak, I am strong.
John 9:1-3:
9 As Jesus walked along, he saw a man who had been blind since birth. 2 Jesus’ disciples asked, “Teacher, why was this man born blind? Was it because he or his parents sinned?”

3 “No, it wasn’t!” Jesus answered. “But because of his blindness, you will see God work a miracle for him.

Matthew 16:21-23:
21 From then on, Jesus began telling his disciples what would happen to him. He said, “I must go to Jerusalem. There the nation’s leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses will make me suffer terribly. I will be killed, but three days later I will rise to life.”

22 Peter took Jesus aside and told him to stop talking like that. He said, “God would never let this happen to you, Lord!”

23 Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Satan, get away from me! You’re in my way because you think like everyone else and not like God.”
Satan in the book of Job basically tells God that the only reason Job loves him is because he avoids the cross, Satan say’s “Wait until he is faced with the cross and he will curse you to your face.”

I believe C.S. Lewis writes a good piece in his book ‘Screwtape Letters’ where the senior devil, Screwtape, writes to his junior tempter, Wormwood, about how to lead a human astray.

Do not be deceived, Wormwood. Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys. - Screwtape

It’s very good of you to offer your suffering to Jesus. Do you offer your suffering for the salvation of sinners?

That will work!!! I offer my suffering to the intentions of our Lady hoping that she can take this dust and grow roses which she can place before the Lord. This way my suffering is magnified in her heart as combining in her suffering may somehow purify mine to be more pleasing to the Lord.
How the Lord sees value in human suffering is completely beyond me, however in faith I believe all evil can be turned to good by His Majesty and power.
But you are doing very well indeed. May He lessen your sorrow if not your suffering.

One thing you should do is offer up your suffering to Jesus for some particular intention (e.g. for the poor souls in Purgatory, the conversion of sinners, Mary’s intentions, etc.). And know that when you are offering up your suffering that you are offering it up in union with the merits of the sufferings of Jesus Christ in Gethsemene and on Calvary. God bless you.

I am looking for clarification on this issue. Do you Catholics believe that your suffering actually helps others? how does that work, exactly? And does one then go out of their way to suffer in order to make up for the sins of others? This is very confusing to me.

In strict justice, every crime a person commits, or every sin, is due a punishment. Just like if you went to court, and the judge sentenced you to twenty lashes with a cane, or some such thing.

Now let’s say someone else steps in and says, “I’ll take those lashes for him.” an innocent person, who didn’t commit the crime. That’s what suffering for others can do. One person commits a sin, say goes off with a prostitute, commits murder, some such thing, and then an innocent person steps in and says, “I’ll take the penalty for him.”

Hi eric,

Welcome to the forum. 🙂

Yes, we Catholics believe that our suffering helps others. The poster Shin before me, explained it very well.

I don’t go out of my way to “look for suffering,” although some of the saints in the Catholic Church did do that. I am not that heroic. I just use the suffering that is already present in my life, and “offer it up” for others.

Blue_Rose, you are doing just fine with your prayers.

I do the same thing as you do. I tend to use spontaneous prayers when I am in the depths of my own suffering, as sometimes that is all that I can do at the time.

Other times, I have prayed the Stations of the Cross, or have prayed prayers before a crucifix in my home.

Thank you. However, I guess what I want to know is in regards to people flagellating themselves and other forms of self abuse. I read “Story of a Soul” by St. Therese and she refers at one point to a small crucifix she wore with spike to pierce her flesh and so on. I am wondering if people still do these types of things, and isn’t this a wee bit like masochism? Is it a sin, therefore if a person gets pleasure from pain or is it still considered virtuous? I’m afraid I find the whole thing a bit confusing.

Well self-abuse for the purpose of sensual pleasure would be a sin.

But mortification and penance are different than that, their interior motivations are the opposite, to suppress concupiscence and for supernatural goals, and there is no desire for any sensual pleasure as part of it, but instead the opposite.

Mortification is all about not experiencing pleasures, and detachment from them, and so being able to grow in fortitude and other virtues as well as offer up satisfaction for justice and all at root for charity’s sake.

'Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

For if you live according to the flesh, you shall die: but if by the Spirit you mortify the deeds of the flesh, you shall live.’

Romans 8:12-13

‘For I delight in the law of God, in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from the body of this death?’

Romans 7:22-24
