Hi everyone,

By the works of Protestant Jürgen Moltmann I am really fascinated for the dogma of the cosmic eschatology, or: ‘the new heaven and earth’.
Now, I was wondering if there exist also some reflection on this subject (new heaven and earth, new creation) in Roman Catholic circles.
In the past this happened mainly by Hans Urs of Balthasar.

But does anyone of you know a famous contemporary Roman Catholic theologian who addresses these issues?

Thanks for replying,
Antoine

Maybe if you could explain a bit about what that concept is we might be more able to help.

Eschatology upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3c/Speakerlink.svg/11px-Speakerlink.svg.png(“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:En-uk-eschatology.ogg”)/ˌɛskəˈtɒlədʒ(“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English#Key”)/ (from the Greek ἔσχατος/ἐσχάτη/ἔσχατον, eschatos/eschatē/eschaton meaning “last” and -logy meaning “the study of”, first used in English around 1550)[1] is a part of theology, philosophy, and futurology concerned with what are believed to be the final events of history, the ultimate destiny of humanity—commonly referred to as the “end of the world” or “end time”.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines eschatology as “The department of theological science concerned with ‘the four last things: death, judgement, heaven, and hell’.”[2]
In the context of mysticism, the phrase refers metaphorically to the end of ordinary reality and reunion with the Divine. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eschatology )
Here are a bunch of Catholic resources

If you like this kind of thing, check out Bishop N.T. Wright. He is Anglican but the things he says fit greatly with Catholicism (especially his studies of Paul).

also check out the catechism, numbers 1042-1050.

Thanks for your suggestions.

N.T. Wright I already found, but he is not a Roman-Catholic theologian.
I’m really searching for a Roman-Catholic systematic theologian.

Greetz,
Antoine

I have this same question — are there Catholic theologians and/or books specifically about the “new creation” and “new heaven and a new earth?” I’m familiar N. T. Wright’s many writings and lectures on this, but I’m not comfortable with the ways in which he departs from Catholicism.

It seems there should be a wealth of material on so profound a topic, but I’m not finding it. Thanks, friendster, for the references to the CCC.

I’m not familiar with how CAF works yet, but it looks like this topic is quite old and its question was never answered. If the topic has migrated elsewhere, please point me in the right direction, and thanks.

Why? It would all be speculation anyway.

If you search for “end times” threads here on CAF, you will find that most attract little attention. Most Catholics simply don’t care.

Many protestants think the “end times” are imminent (perhaps within their own lifetime). Few Catholics think this. I believe mankind has many thousands of years to go, and few Catholics would bother to mount a contrary argument.

It would be like speculating on Superbowl #10,191. People might be talking and speculating about Superbowl 50 (the upcoming one), but nobody cares about Superbowl 10191.

If you had not used the word “cosmic” in the title of your thread, I would not have read it.
