Okay, so one of the objections to the argument is that the universe is infinite.

I’ve read that you cannot have an actual infinite because you cannot have an infinite amount of past events. I kind of get it but could someone explain this to me?

Furthermore, couldn’t the same be applied to God? How was God, who existed from eternity, able to start the universe 14 billion years ago? God is an actual infinite, right? Doesn’t the series of past events apply here too?

One could argue that God is outside of time and so this past events thing doesn’t apply to Him, but isn’t that just as good an answer as saying what happened before the big bang is meaningless because no time existed before the big bang?
 
I can’t speak to much of your post, but many scientific cosmologists think the universe is NOT infinite. They think it’s more like the surface of a balloon.

So, basically, what you’re getting at here is that you used to think that the universe was infinite, and someone told you it wasn’t because there cannot be an infinite number of past events; correct?

That is a very, very simple explanation of a complex issue.

Basically, by what I understand about time, entropy and physics, it is impossible for anything existing in our reality to be infinite. This is because of the entropy. Entropy is:
  1. Symbol S For a closed thermodynamic system, a quantitative measure of the amount of thermal energy not available to do work.
  2. A measure of the disorder or randomness in a closed system.
  3. A measure of the loss of information in a transmitted message.
  4. The tendency for all matter and energy in the universe to evolve toward a state of inert uniformity.
  5. Inevitable and steady deterioration of a system or society.
The last two definitions are the two I’ll be focusing on here. Basically, physics shows us that the longer things exist, the less unique they become. They are constantly working towards a state of “inert uniformity”, which basically means that everything has lost any distinguishing features, and is incapable of performing any tasks. Entropy applies to all systems, whether they’re the size of a universe, or as small as an element. If the universe had existed infinitely, it would have long since surpassed a state of entropy, meaning that we not only wouldn’t exist, but couldn’t exist because there would be no elements to form us. This is not the only proof against an infinite universe, however; Time is another excellent proof.

“Time” is the system we use to measure this entropy. We know that “time” exists because we can determine a base point from which to measure all changes that have occurred in our universe (approx. 13 billion years ago). We cannot measure anything before that, because prior to “the big bang” this universe didn’t exist; meaning that there was nothing to measure.

Anything which is infinite cannot have a beginning. To demonstrate this, I’ll define infinite:

  1. Having no boundaries or limits.
  2. Immeasurably great or large; boundless: infinite patience; a discovery of infinite importance.
  3. Mathematics
    a. Existing beyond or being greater than any arbitrarily large value.

We are concerned with definitions 1 and 2 here. Since we are able to define a starting point for our universe (a measurable base point from which we can measure change to the system that is the universe) We cannot say that it has no boundaries, or that it is immeasurably large. Hence, it is not infinite.

“Change” is a side effect of time and entropy. To God, there is no such thing as time. He didn’t start the universe 14 billion years ago; he simply started the universe. The fact that it has been 13, 14, or even 2,156 billion years to us has absolutely no bearing on God, because he exists outside of the physical reality, and therefore outside of the influence of time. Past, present and future only exist for us because we live in a changing state, and we need to have a way to make sense of those changes; such classifications are useless to God because he is an unchanging being.

I don’t see the problem here. Technically, there was nothing “before” the big bang, because “before” as a concept only exists in a reality subservient to time. What happened “before” the big bang is meaningless because nothing happened, I don’t see how that would negate God, as you seem to be implying.

I have seen enough miracles, things we can not explain, events that must be divane, so all I can say is that God is real, and all are created by Him. I have never see anything that would contradict that fact, God is The Creator.
 
Eternity in God is *not *an infinite succession of moments. God is “outside” time. He created it. As Boethius put it “Eternity is the simultaneously-whole and perfect possession of interminable life.” St. Thomas explains (ST I, Q10) what Boethius means by this.

As to the possibility of an eternal universe (eternal in *this *case meaning an infinite succession of time), St. Thomas actually argues that from a strictly philosophical standpoint it is *theoretically *possible (i.e. God could have made such a universe), but given divine revelation it is not possible (since God’s will gives a certain necessity to all that happens). Sorry I don’t have all the relevant quotes in front of me, but I believe it’s in a couple places in his Summa Theologica, Summa Contra Gentiles, and an essay called On the Eternity of the Universe. I can look it up later if you’re interested.

St. Bonaventure (following other philosophers before him) argues that an eternal universe is not even theoretically possible in philosophy, and gives several reasons. Again, I don’t have it in front of me (I wrote a paper on this), but one reason he gives is the time argument you mention. It’s kind of mind-bending but I tend to side with St. Thomas.

An infinite future has not happened yet, so clearly it’s not an actual infinite. But what about the past. Isn’t *that *an actual infinite? I would say no, because the past isn’t “real” it’s just a perception; i.e. it doesn’t exist except in memory. All that really exists is the present. To have an actual infinite, I think you’d have to have all the past moments exist simultaneously. You could argue they exist simultaneously for God, but then the actual infinite is in God, not in the physical universe.

This takes us to your next issue. There’s no problem with infinity in God because he’s without limitations. The problem with actual infinites is restricted to the physical universe.

We’ve been over this again and again in recent years.

Aquinas does NOT say an infinite succession of time is possible. People get this from a careless reading of On the Eternity of the Universe.

I’m not going to spend a couple hours of my time going over this again. Somebody will just cough it up again in a couple of months.

It should be sufficient for anybody to realize that any event happened a finite time ago.
What’s hard to understand about that?

:hmmm: You stated the age of the universe, that is not an infinite number, large may be but not infinite.
Further before Einstein’s theory of relativity most if not all astronomers and physicists believed the universe to be infinite.
Almost nobody nowdays asserts that.
The universe is finite with a fairly accurately measured age.

In the oscillating cosmologies each Big Crunch - Big Bang is a reset, and again the new universe starts in an ordered state.

God is greater that infinite in a sense. Infinity has a beginning but God has not beginning he just always was. This isn’t something we can understand through human logic. Though this sounds faulty it is true. Faith is something that one must have to start to understand God

Any integer (positive or negative) is a finite distance from zero. That does not mean that the set of integers is finite.

Because the second law (of thermodynamics, I’m assuming) doesn’t define entropy, but rather it’s affect. I was focusing on defining entropy and then moved on to what it means for the system (which is the point of the second law).

To the OP, if you’re curious, the second law of thermodynamics is:

That’s all well and good, assuming their assumptions are correct. I’m not saying that they aren’t, but rather trying to answer the OP’s question. However, I reject their assertion that there could be an infinite past. What they are proposing is a causality loop (I don’t remember the technical name for it, sorry) wherein the cause of an event is contained within its affect. While this is theoretically possible once a system is underway, to claim it is truly infinite would be to claim that it has always existed, which is impossible. Matter cannot create itself, so at some point there had to have been a catalyst which set the affect in motion for the first time. There could have been a massive, massive number of iterations of our universe since then, but that doesn’t make it infinite.

All that aside, this sort of thing is purely conjecture, since there’s no real math to back it up, only theoretical math. Basically, it’s just as big a faith statement to believe in a causal loop as it is to believe in God; even more of one by my estimation, but that’s for another discussion.

As I discussed above, #1: That’s all conjecture; #2: it could not be truly infinite, but only appear infinite due to our limitation in comprehension. It had to have a start at some point, otherwise the causal loop wouldn’t exist period. I’ll agree that it is theoretically possible for it to exist in a infinitely-repeating loop, but it had to have a start, so it cannot be considered truly infinite.

Umm… 1 is your beginning, or zero, depending on if you consider it positive or not; personally I do, so my beginning would be zero. Also, unless you pick a base point from which to count, the numbers serve no purpose and have no meaning; similarly, unless you pick a point from which to define the “start” of time, time is meaningless. I did not restrict any definitions; the only “problem” with my definition is that I didn’t use the second law when discussing entropy, which isn’t really a problem as I explained above.

Well, a full statement of the 2nd law would include the definition of all the terms used, but the point was why eliminate the formal definition - the only ‘true’ one from the point of view of the physics - and concentrate on the arm-waving common english definition, which is only an approximation. I’m probably being a math snob, in other words.

A) If you draw a map of causes and effects, each cause/effect being a point and an arrow going from a cause to its effects, you have what mathematicians (and IT blokes) call a directed graph. You can draw a lot of conclusions about such graphs without even knowing if they represent cause-and-effect or information flow in a network or something else, just on how it is logically possible to link up points.

For example if you allow only a finite number of nodes (causes/effects) and do not allow directed loops (where you can go around following the direction of the arrows and get back to your start point) you have a finite directed acyclic graph, where it is trivial to show that you must have at least one node with no arrows going to it, a.k.a. an uncaused cause.
This is one class of argument, that is based purely on the logic of how you can possibly link up nodes, given certain rules such as “no loops”.

B) Another class of argument is based on the rules themselves.

For example, if “a finite number of nodes” is not a rule, there is no reason why we cannot have an infinite chain of cause/effect ‘nodes’ with no uncaused cause. Just label each node with an integer (including negatives) and each node ‘N’ is caused by ‘N-1’ and causes ‘N+1’.

I don’t see why. Even in an infinite series of events, duration and the seperation in time between events would have meaning, even if the ‘origin’ (the time T=0) of any temporal coordinate system might be purely arbitrary, but not necessarily even that.

You haven’t illustrated how my definition differed, nor why it was wrong. I simply went with the simple definition because it was the one most readily available.

Physics is logic, at least usually. I used a logical system to negate an illogical thought. Simple enough.

Both. Physical and Logical grounds are the same to me. You are correct that my argument is similar to the contingency argument, not identical, but similar.

I never denied that. However, by having a beginning, it ceases to be truly infinite, because it has a set boundary, even if that boundary is only in one direction. I’ve never denied that our universe could repeat itself infinitely into the future, but that does not make it infinite, since it still has to have a beginning. (I addressed this in my first post).

That statement was more philosophical in nature, and not really important to my argument. I agree with you to an extent, time is arbitrary, as is the way we measure it.
 
Another thought I just had on the concept of an infinitely repeating causal loop. Wouldn’t the nature of entropy demand that the loop also begin to become disordered over repeated iterations, breaking down (seeking thermodynamic equilibrium) over time? Since entropy applies to all systems, and a loop is a system, it seems logical to conclude that the loop itself would also be subject to the effects of entropy. Following this, once the loop is completely broken down, it stands to reason that it would no longer be able to maintain itself, meaning that it would cease to repeat infinitely, meaning that it not only has a lower bounds (starting point) but also an upper bounds (ending point).

That is really weird, and likely to make discussion difficult. Sure, physical arguments use logic in addition to the laws of physics, but if you cannot differentiate between an argument based solely on logic and one based at least in part on the perceived laws of physics it will be hard to have a reasonable debate.

Ok, you are presumably talking about the specific part in poitn B that talked about a causal loop A->B->C->A. (Note that the infinite chain of causes (N-1)->(N)->(N+1) for all integers N is emphatically not a causal loop)

And no. You seem to be envisaging a sort of animation where a ‘thing’ of some description goes from A to B to C and back to A, then argue that this must have ‘started’ at some point in ‘past time.’ But this diagram just represents a causal chain, not some animation. There is no ‘how long it is able to maintain itself’ - ‘A’ is ‘A’, not ‘A this time around’.

I never denied that. However, by having a beginning, it ceases to be truly infinite, because it has a set boundary, even if that boundary is only in one direction.
Then you have your own personal definition of ‘infinite’ which makes the question ‘can past time be infinite’ trivial. Since ‘past time’ ends at the present it has a boundary, so is not ‘infinite’ by your definition.

This has no relevance to whether or not it can extend into the past without a beginning.
