I recall at one time seeing two Diocesan papers from Bishops who lived beside each other in two areas of South America, under very arduous missionary circumstances.

One Bishops newspaper raised questions about issues that are raised on this thread, Our Lady of Fatima, the Sacred Heart ect

The other Bishops paper asked other questions:

Such as why are six thousand people dying of hunger every day?

I would ask similiar questions.

Isn’t the devotional slant of this thread so much navel gazing?

Any close reading of the Gospels would tell that we have a moral duty to respond to those in need.

What does escape notice, it seems, is the number of times that Christ “went off to pray”.

Praying is not navel gazing, it is a neceesary part of being a follower of Christ.

And talking a lot about poverty is not going to get much accomplished.

Not having read the two papers, it is a hard question to answer. I don’t really know how the one bishop approached the issue of prayer, or how the other one approached the issue of poverty.

Hopefully, there would be a blend of the two.

Dear friend

I have been a member on this forum for awhile now. I have made many appeals for prayer and action on different issues and those threads have seen very low responses, whereas when a thread is posted regarding someone’s sinful nature or some point of unimportant day to day chat then the numbers flood up and lots of folks post.

I could be led to think folks don’t care and don’t pray for the issues I’ve posted up on, but I don’t think that that is truly the case. I think people read and see my threads and those of others who post on similar matters and feel they have nothing to add to the post but make a humble prayer to God for that issue or severe need.

It would be very easy to leap to the worst case scenario and I refuse to think that way. However it would be to the whole Catholic community online and those viewing hot threads for those that are seen, beneficial, to be important to Catholics are ones of acts of mercy and prayer. Otherwise we look like a bunch of whiners and a bunch of devout folks moaning on about the world and the state of faith, who don’t seem to pray when this is surely not the case!

In the volume of posts about the ‘i’ the ‘self’ should be viewed as an improvement of Christ-likeness so to bear fruit for others, I surely hope so that that is the case! I am sure folks here are not looking to enter heaven by themselves and forget the rest of humanity, if that was the case, they would not be entering heaven at all!

Navel gazing? Who of a spiritual nature can bear that for more than a few minutes? No-one! No there is not an epidemic of navel gazing but the issues people post on could make it seem that way!

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

Very good, balanced response, dear Teresa - as usual!!

It’s a question that has troubled me a bit, too - do we seem to care enough about the really serious world issues … but like you, I trust that folks do in fact pray about them, even if many of our posts can look a bit self-oriented, and possibly small-minded. I’m guilty of it, often enough!
