Wear Orthodox Vestments instead of Latin Rite Vestments? Like, instead of the Stole the Epitrachelion, or instead of a Chasuble a Phelonion.

Edit: Sorry if this should be in the Liturgy and Sacraments section, if so, please move it.

Did you know that the only time vestments are referred to in scripture, it’s referring to pagan priests?

oh brosam, youre such a funny guy. 😃 what about those worn by levite priests?

In regards to the OP, barring some extraordianry bi-ritual concelebration no, they could not. The rubrics for the Roman rite provide the proper vestments to be worn just as the rubrics for the Ruthenian rite or the Maronite rite do the same.

But why? As far as I know the Stole and the Epitrachelion evolved from the same vestment, as did the Chasuble and the Phelonion. Couldn’t they be considered different styles of the same vestment, almost like the Fiddleback and the Gothic Vestments?

I don’t think electric guitars and pianos are there either. Nor are overhead projectors, stage lighting, microphones, neckties, sweater-vests or denim.

Your point? Catholics are really pagans?

Do you have a Christmas Tree? Do you paint Easter Eggs? 🤷

Certainly! My Catholic pastor does it all the time! 😃

Of course, he’s a priest in the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Church, but he is nonetheless, fully and completely, in every sense of the word, a Catholic priest.

I know, I know… smart aleck answer, huh? Well, to be nit-picky, the OP didn’t specify that/if he or she was referring only to priests of the Latin Church. He/she merely referred to a Catholic priest (right??), and my priest certainly fits that description!

…just pointing out, once again, that the word “Catholic” does not automatically mean “Latin Catholic,” as a lot of folks, many fellow Catholics included, believe. 😉

…but I digress…

You had me going there for a second 😛 . But my question was serious, why can’t Orthodox vestments just be considered a different style?

Agnos,

Very clever. 👍 Too bad you are not Catholic. I wish I knew someone like you here in this pitiful East Texas Bible Town!!

Poor brosam. Looks like Agnos has been out doing him all day in the Bible department!!! :o

I will assume that you mean Eastern Rite vestments. Priests are supposed to wear the vestments specific to their Rite even when concelebrating in another Rite, Unless the are bi-ritual.

Well, in some cases they are worn differently - the stole, for instance. That said, while I suppose there are probably some sorts of tailoring regulations out that in order to ensure that our names for vestments are meaningful, you could probably do your best to make Latin vestments look more Eastern by picking materials, colors, etc. from legitimate options that most closely approximate the Eastern styles.

I believe the late Fulton J. Sheen wore them once or twice, but he was celebrating a biritual liturgy. And Father Mitch Pacwa does, but he’s biritual, too. I don’t think you cna mix up the parts for different rituals.
