But doesn’t this go against Paul’s command to married couples regarding sexual relations?Bishops (particularly Eastern Rite ones) don’t have to be unmarried, but they do have to be celibate, so if they are married, they must forego all sexual relations henceforth.
“Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” (1 Corinthians 7:5)
So even if a married couple decides to mutually agree to refrain from sex for a “time” for the purpose of devotion to prayer, they would still have to “come together” (have sex) again, so they aren’t tempted to commit adultery (since they “lack self-control”).
