Could He have done this?

Usually every morning I wake up with a song stuck in my head. The song that popped in my head this morning is a protestant hymn that I grew up singing. I never really thought about the words, but did today since the lyrics were stuck in my head all. day. long. lol
The lyrics goes something like this:
He could have called 10,000 angels
to destroy the world and set him free
He could have call 10,000 angels
but he died alone for you and me.

Could Jesus really have done that? That wasn’t the Will of His Father…

What wasn’t the will of the Father?

Destroying the world. If it was God’s Will to have the world destroyed 2,000 years ago, he would have done it. Right?
Oh, yes. He certainly could if He wanted to. But I think the song is saying that Christ died for us, willingly. He could have called every angel in heaven to wipe us out. But instead, God showed us mercy and saved us.

I believe that the song is referring to the incident in the Garden of Gethsemane. Peter had just cut off the servant’s ear. Jesus responds by saying, “Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matt. 26:53)

Jesus is saying that he could get out of being crucified but he will not because of his great love for us, so that we can have salvation.

BTW, one source that I looked at says that a Roman legion, a military unit, consisted of up to 5,000 soldiers. That would make the number of angels about 60,000. I would think that the song is just using poetic licence when it says 10,000.

He could inasmuch as He is God, not a lesser being 🙂 But - and you have made an excellent remark - He couldn’t because “the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing” 👍

So ultimately Christ - like us, though in a different way - could have done many things but instead did only the will of His Father and Our Father, perfectly. This was to show us the way 🙂

We, too, could do many things as members of the body of Christ:
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these
However, we should focus on doing the Father’s will, which is a path of humbleness and littleness. I’d like to add on this point that Christ spent 30 years of His divine life at an unknown carpenter workshop in a small and despised town, Nazareth, He who at age 12 taught the doctors of the Law at the Temple of Jerusalem and left them spellbound and greatly amazed at His knowledge. This He did to do the Father’s will and to sanctify daily work, transforming it from Adam’s curse into Christ’s blessing. Surely we always look for greatness, great signs, great feats, great miracles, great works. But often we are called to be very little, do very little works, offer very little sacrifices, and how often we disregard those little, almost insignificant things because of our own will for greater things…God’s will truly isn’t so hidden in our lives! 🙂

Jesus is God-He could do anything. In His human will He would be fierce-fully tempted to avoid the terrible pain of the passion. But the divine will was that He endure it for our sake. That’s what makes His act all the more awesome.

I have nothing to add, but what an awesome song to wake up singing during Holy Week!

In Christ,
Ellen

I know he was capable of it. 🙂
