Could I have been a married priest?

No, Ukrainian Catholic priests cannot get married, HOWEVER, Ukrainian Catholics along with many other Eastern Catholic churches ordain married men to the Holy Priesthood. There is a big difference.

Bishops are chosen from among the celebate clergy.

If what you are saying is true, then I could have married and become a priest and lived happily ever after instead of having spent the past 25 years of my life arguing with God. If so then not only is He a jealous God, but He is also implacable. So lets be clear on this, can I get married, since I am a Ukrainian Greek Catholic, and also become a priest. And if that would mean that I can’t become the Patriarch, then so be it. Only it would have being nice if someone might have explained this to me earlier on before I decided to take a vow of celibacy which has driven me half mad.

Do you belong to an order? Priests don’t take vows of celibacy, but those who belong to an order or live a monastic life do, but that is not part of becoming a priest. Also, marriages are not allowed after ordination, so even if you don’t have a vow, you still wouldn’t get married.

This has been the age-old tradition. But there were issues 25 years ago when the Vatican suppressed Eastern traditions of married clergy outside of their “traditional homelands”. So with you being in the UK, you wouldn’t have been able to be ordained if you were married 25 years ago. That would have been possible only if you were in Ukraine. Then again, there wasn’t a Ukraine 25 years ago (well, there was, but it was a Soviet State, not an independent country).

Did the congregation then have the responsibility of providing the income for his family? If not how did they juggle incomes and church finances?. Scandals common? If yes, would it be typical for the congregation to prefer a less burdened unmarried priest.?

An office job will pay the same regardless if you are single or married. Why should a married priest be any of a burden to the congregation than a single priest?
