Could Jesus get sick?

During his earthly life, Our Lord experienced hunger, thirst, pain, and death.

But many folks think Jesus could not have gotten ill during his earthly life (maybe because they associate illness with the effects of our fall from Grace).

What do you think?

I don’t see why not… I don’t think he would be sick long, maybe a short day cold, or the sniffles as a kid. Although, now that I think about it, I probably should have voted for the third option. After he began his ministry it would have been odd for the Son of God (who is going around curing everyone) to come down with a common cold. 😛

How could Jesus who was 100% man, not get sick? But how could Jesus who was 100% God, get sick?

Does anything, anywhere indicate he ever suffered any illness? I never thought about it before, but I don’t recall anything like that.

That’s a Great Point,
Maybe in his early life (The Hidden Years) he experienced those things which was part of His human nature, so he can take the suffering of those he cured in his heart.

His 100% Humanity=to experience the human experience
His 100% Divinity=to translate that to the Divine Will of the Father.

If part of the reason God became incarnate was to condescend to experience what it is to be human, I see no reason why he shouldn’t have gotten sick.

Just a thought.

Getting sick is just a biological response to some outside influence like bacteria, virus, or bad pizza. One would presume that Christ’s human body would respond as ours does. The advantage He had was He could heal himself. That’s just conjecture of course. We don’t have any scripture to support it and I’m not aware of any other writing that talk about our Lord with the sniffles.

Prior to His death and resurrection, Jesus completely embraced everything about being a human living in a 100% mortal human body, especially every aspect of pain, suffering, and anguish. There is no recorded scripture that I found which says Jesus fell physically ill, but while living as a human among us Jesus put aside his Godly power unless it was needed to serve the Father’s purposes.

Phil 2:5-8 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant [or slave, i.e., a human], being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.

After He arose from the dead Jesus lived in his glorified body, the First Fruit of the resurrection.

1 Cor 15:20-22 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

Jesus’ new body no longer felt death or physical pain. This is what awaits us also.

Phil 3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself.

Rev 21:4-5 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, (for) the old order has passed away." The one who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

Yup, he got sick. He worked by the sweat of his brow, too.

I think that most interesting(?) is tht the Son of God – (God) – actually died.

… um, am I missing a point here?

I answered no. Jesus was the new Adam. It was through the sin of Adam and Eve that death, disease and illness came to man. Since Jesus knew no sin, He would not have suffered the affects of it. Jesus is the first fruit. While we are made in His image, He came to earth in ours. But, He was what God wishes us all to be and meant for us to be when He created Adam and Eve.

And we must remember that no one killed Jesus, He laid down His life so that He could take it up again. Without His willingness to die, it wouldn’t have happened.

As to the fact that He felt hunger, thirst etc… Well, we know that Adam and Eve must have felt those things before the fall since God told them they could eat of any tree but the Tree of Knowledge.

Just my two cents worth.

Yes, but He could heal Himself. 🙂
He could, but he wouldn’t.

This is like Satan’s first temptation in Matthew 4:1-4. When Jesus was hungry, Satan tempted Jesus to turn the rocks into bread. This would be showing mistrust in the Father to provide.

Excellent point.

Actually, the Catholic Encyclopedia says this:
The Fathers deny that Christ assumed sickness. There is no mention in Scripture of any sickness of Jesus. Sickness is not a weakness that is a necessary belonging of human nature. It is true that pretty much all mankind suffers sickness. It is not true that any specific sickness is suffered by all mankind. Not all men must needs have measles. No one definite sickness universally belongs to human nature; hence no one definite sickness was assumed by Christ. St. Athanasius gives the reason that it were unbecoming that He should heal others who was Himself not healed
As Christ did not take sickness upon Himself, so other imperfections, such as deformities, which are not common to mankind, were not His.

Amen Reggie!! (and I think what you said is more than two cents worth! 😉 )

If sickness is a consequence of sin and Jesus was free of sin, then He was free of sickness too. :yup:

If it is written in the Bible that the Messiah would never experience corruption in his body, why assume that means only after death? it may very well mean he would not be affected by any kind of bacteria, virus, etc. during his lifetime…

:blessyou:

But Our Lord experienced pain and sorrow… and death. Are these not also consequences of sin?

Indeed, and though Jesus never sinned and was never in Original Sin because he always had sanctifying grace and was All Holy by his hypostatic union…the body he took on was still a fallen body, and so he still had the physical consequences of sin.

BUT, sickness, as the Catholic Encyclopedia and the Church Fathers said, is NOT a universal consequence of sin. Although most people get sick in their lifetime, there is no one disease that is necessary for humans to get. Therefore, it is said that Jesus probably didn’t get sick.

He is thought to only have experienced those universal things: pain when hurt, hunger when deprived of food, fatigue when deprived of sleep, thirst when deprived of drink, death when old age comes or the body is destroyed.

Sickness is much more doubtful.

But (in all deference to the CA and the ECFs, which I don’t believe have been specifically cited, BTW), there are also many different kinds of pain. No one particular type of pain is “necessary” for humans to experience. For example - I have had a kidney stone (and it hurt like the dickens). But I’m not sure Our Lord ever had a kidney stone. However, Our Lord was scourged at a Roman pillar and hung on a Cross. I have never experienced this kind of pain (and I hope I never do!). I would categorize these as radically different pain experiences - and different “types” of pain (at least as different as the experience of measels and chicken pox). There is no “one type of pain” (as compared to “one type of disease”) that is “necessary” for humans to experience - it is possible (though unlikely) that a human could live a lifetime (maybe brief) and never experience pain. Yet Our Lord suffered pain (of a type that few of us will ever experience). So the analogy doesn’t quite work for me…

You have a good point. We 21st century humans understand that disease is caused by bacteria, viruses, genetic defects, and poor sanitation.

But 2,000 years ago people thought that disease was caused by demons and divine punishment for sin. If Jesus fell physically ill it would serve to discredit Him in the eyes of His disciples.

Between his parents, they knew evreything 😛 to keep him from getting sick.
