Could Purgatory last centuries?

I’ve recently read that for certain souls Purgatory could last for centuries (earth time). Is this true?
 
Dear PMV,

There is no time after we die. Often puratory is spoken of in time as a help in understanding the degrees of purgation that it entails. To say that one is in purgatory for a long time is to say that the purgation can be severe for some people–which it can be.
