Like many women, I have a condition called Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome {PCOS} which causes fertility and cycle problems. I found out at 14 years old that due to the hormone levels I was infertile and would never have a child and I’ve had a number of years to get ok with that idea. I’m 33 now. Three years ago the condition became far worse with non-stop bleeding, pain and it was making me very ill.
I couldn’t be treated with hormones due to them causing side effects, so I was left with only one option and that was 2 procedures that would re-enforce my chemical infertility by destroying the womb lining and ligation.
The MEA destroyed the womb lining and thus stopped the never ending bleeding. The Ligation is done to prevent ectopic pregnancy and is done here in Australia as standard procedure after an MEA is done.
I spoke about this in depth with my then confessor and was given full permission to have the operations as they wouldn’t change my infertility, nothing can fix that, they would just restore my health.
Twelve months post operations and I fell great now, yet I do not understand why some Catholics have such a problem with what I had done.
I ask as some people I know who are Catholic are upset, have rejected me…

- I was already infertile and had been through extensive testing.
- I can’t take hormones due to side effects.
- there was no other option left, all other options were exhausted.
