Hello, ive heard that there was already a council addressing abuse on indulgences prior to Martin Luthers 95 thesis. Does anyone know the name of this council?
Not an ecumenical Council (in fact, the one immediately prior–the Fifth Lateran Council–granted an indulgence for monetary donations to a particular charitable cause, which was the kind of thing ripe for abuse).
That said, there were some efforts to clean things up in this regard.
The second paragraph of the subsection entitled “Abuses” in the following article shows various measures taken to combat abuses over time in the Church.
