Just a note: Technically there is no such thing as a blasphemy against a saint or holy person. “Blasphemy” means disrespect to God or very sacred objects.

Thanks! Sorry 3-year Catholic revert here haha.

I felt offended that someone would say such a bad thing to such an inspirational woman.

wow Mother Theresa did so much , she helped so many people

leave it to someone who’s Idea of charity work is a couple bucks here and there to write negatively about Mother Theresa

forgive my judging of the author of that article

Amen!

Look we are all sinners. My ex-spiritual director used to say

A saint’s past was a sinner.

A sinner’s future is a saint.

Think about it this way. No matter “how bad” Mother Theresa could’ve been - it’s not fair to judge her based on that when she clearly did some great works.

In the same way, in high school we might have led many people astray. Is that to take away our current works as adults in this day and age?

Actually this is incorrect.

What is Blasphemy?

'Blasphemy is a word, or a discourse injurious to God, his Saints, or Religion.

It is blasphemy to attribute to God defects which do not, or could not belong to him, such as taxing him with partiality, injustice, or the like.

It is blaspheming God to deny to him that which is his due, such as pretending that He disdains to take care of his creatures, that He takes no notice of the affairs of this world, &c.

It is blasphemy against God to speak with contempt of his divine attributes, perfections, &c.

It is blasphemy of the worst kind to speak disrespectfully of God, even though it be through custom, and the sin is still greater if the blasphemy is spoken in anger, passion, or through contempt.

It is blaspheming God to join to his adorable name certain terms which dishonour him; . . .]

It is blasphemy against the Saints, to mock them, to attribute to them defects or failings, to find fault with the honours rendered to them by the Church, &c.

It is blaspheming Religion, to turn it into ridicule, to blame its practices, to speak ill of the Sacred Scriptures, &c., &c.

Then there are also blasphemies of mind and heart; these are thoughts and desires contrary to the divine perfections or to things which concern religion; such is the blasphemy of the fool who said in his heart “There is no God.” This is a horrible, an execrable sin, and deserving of the most terrible punishment

Blasphemers are no longer stoned to death, nor are their tongues pierced; but let them not triumph the more of that, for the time of chastisement will soon come, when they, wretches that they are, shall receive the punishment due to such crimes.’

Thank you Shin!

Okay I’m a bit confused now. Would you mind if I take this to my spiritual director?

Why ask anyone if anyone minded such a thing, are you asking me? I simply replied to correct the above statement.

I don’t actually have interest in reading the article and dealing with what was wrong/right about Mother Teresa’s statements and practices.

Her spiritual director was sent to prison.

Hey careful read!
I didn’t bother to read anything here but before I begin to read it I would like someone experienced to counter every sentence.

scienceblog.com/60730/mother-teresa-anything-but-a-saint/
i took a look at it - there’s not much to see there
it looks like an atheist blog
and their criticism includes: "her overly dogmatic views regarding, in particular, abortion, contraception, and divorce.”
i don’t know about the other stuff, but this was enough to put the article in my mental trash bin
all i got from it is a reminder that there are ppl who, rather that lifting their eyes to Heaven, keep them focussed on the muck

what i did find most interesting was the post here on her spiritual advisor - actually that is a shock for me

They seem to confuse the word “Saint” with “perfect.” Of course a person would have to do extensive research to verify or debunk their claims. That being said, the ideology of the authors is pretty clear when they complain about “her overly dogmatic views regarding, in particular, abortion, contraception, and divorce.”

Perhaps I shouldn’tve mentioned it. Too late now, in any case.

FWIF, make of it what you will, there are many different ways one could take it. :crossrc:

just ran a cursory Google on this:

kind of bizarre - atheist and anti-Catholic blogs mention pedophile Donald J. McGuire

Catholic sites speak of: Msgr. Leo Maasburg, Father Michael van der Peet, Father Paul Murray, and Father Celeste Van Exem, all righteous individuals

another bizarre phenomenon in the weird world of media

I respect your writings and opinion! I’d hate to become that guy who says

in a childish blaming tone “hey Father! Shin in the Catholic forums said that blasphemy applies to saints!”

I just wanted to simply ask your permission so that it doesn’t become gossip.

Okay! What happened to her spiritual advisor?

Could you elaborate?

Ah, I see. Forgive me.

I misunderstood. Feel free of course, there is no need to ask.

In regard to blasphemy, it appears to be one of a bulk of conversational sins quite forgotten about, as for example, speaking about matters of purity indelicately and in public, lack of prudence and reserve in one’s speech in all regard, treating of the possibly holy with no respect, etc.

There’s pretty much a complete falling away from basic Christian conversation in these times. The most basic sins in speech are unknown and acquiring virtuous conversational skills well, there is a severe lack of virtuous examples to follow so. . .

One becomes quite surprised as one picks up pieces of it perhaps.

A father of the desert once said that he had often regretted speaking, but never regretted silence.

‘Even as God is praised in His saints, in so far as praise is given to the works which God does in His saints, so does blasphemy against the saints, redound, as a consequence, against God.’

St. Thomas Aquinas

‘Blasphemy calls down malediction on your home; and, as the proverb says, it destroys even the ashes in the fireplace.’

St. Padre Pio

‘Do not grow conceited about your interpretations of Scripture, lest your intellect fall victim to blasphemy.’

St. Mark the Ascetic

She spent 50 years picking people off the streets of Calcutta.
And here is what she said.

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
