Country Music Fans. Some recommendations please

I’m a city boy from New York and I’ve just discovered how wonderful this genre of music truly is. Now all I want to do is sit on a porch in my blue jeans, drink beer or whiskey and drive a truck!! (I don’t have any of those things except for the blue jeans, but it’s a start!) So far I’m all about Zac Brown Band, and Sugar Land. These bands seem to be a nice blend of balancing out the old school and new school sounds of country.

Being of West Indian decent I loved Sugar Land’s track “Stuck on You” which threw in a nice Reggae/Dance Hall grove into the song and it worked. Who knew Reggae and country could mix so well. After listening to that track it felt like I was given permission to fully embrace Country music and no longer have to lower the music or roll the window up when I get to a red light.

And it’s been four days and I haven’t stopped listening to the song “Chicken Fried” by ZBB and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. I sing it in the shower with a pathetic attempt at a country twang. Its bad, my wife laughs but I’m having fun!

There are others that I like so far, like Blake Shelton and Keith Urban, but only select songs. No one Id buy an entire album from except ZBB and Sugar Land so far.
So, I’d like to diversify my music selection this way I’m not wearing out these limited songs and artists that I like. Pandora Radio is just not churning out variety fast enough for me. It only loops the same popular songs. Any suggestions on songs or bands/artists that I might like based on the two bands that I’m drawn to?

I’m not a huge fan of some of the country that skews too much towards other genres so I’m not an expert, but here are some others you might like based on liking Sugarland:

CMT also has a search feature where you can select an artist/band and find similar bands. Sometimes it’s hit or miss, but will give you a chance to find other artist that you might not have heard of or considered before.

Or perhaps growing up in Texas would’ve gotten you exposed to Country sooner (see this) or Louisiana (see here) or even Montana (see here).

Or maybe a discussion with Grand dad (see this) about Grandma (or this related cowboy video).

Even our Canadian friends are getting into the Country craze (here)

I completely for got John Denver was a country music artist first. I knew him as a kid in the “Oh. God” movie with George Burns Which I loved. he’s a better country singer than actor. And i liked him as an actor.

My favorite from the wonderful selection you gave me was Terri Clark. And if you see a West Indian man with a mullet one day…please wave…you’ve just met me in real life…and that mullet was inspired by Tobi Keith’s lol:) (my wife would never let me but I can dream)

One thing Ive noticed. There seems to be such a thing as a cool country name. Some of these artists just have the coolest names. like Jason Aldean…that sounds soo cool and soo country. or Johnny Cash and Miranda Lambert. These names Just sound country! Im i right to guess just like in Pop music some of these names are fake for that exact effect?

I want a country name too! What do y’all think of Trent Marshall …yeah…Dats Country all right! Going to demand my family call me Trent Marshall…well maybe just my pets.

And The Carter Family (where June Carter Cash, Johnny Cash, Roseanne Cash, and yes, Carlene Carter all came from.) Can’t go wrong with any Carter Family stuff. “Wildwood Flower” is a classic - I love Loretta Lynn’s version from the Carter Family tribute album a few years ago and Mike (Social Distortion) Ness’ version. (Social Distortion, and the 80’s band Wall of Voodoo both also famously covered “Ring of Fire.”)

If you have a Pandora account, start a station seeded with some artists you know you like and be sure to thumb up or thumb down songs for a while. That is what I did when I first got into Country. I could only name a handfull of singers- Johnny, Willie & Waylon and Pandora exposed me to tons of new stuff I would have never know about and that I do actually like.

Just a head’s up, when you say “old school”, that’s going to be interpreted at least a dozen different ways, depending on who you’re talking to.

For some younger folks, “old school” is gonna be Randy Travis, George Straight, Vince Gill, Dwight Yoakam, etc. Most of that generation are active, and many are collaborating with younger artists. For others, “old school” will be the “Bakersfield sound/Texas sound/outlaw” boys like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Jr., David Allan Coe, etc. Some of these guys have passed on and some are still alive and kicking. Then you’ve got the truly older genres/subgenres like “Nashville sound” (Patsy Cline), Honky Tonk (Hank Williams Sr.), Cowboy (Gene Autry), etc.

Personally, I gravitate toward the more raw sounds. I prefer honky tonk, bluegrass, outlaw, etc. to the smoother, overly-produced (IMO) Nashville sounds. But that’s personal preference. Also, many older folks often lament the influence of pop and R&B sounds in country, but I think it can be done well or poorly.
