Couple urged surrogate mother to abort fetus because of defect

Canada’s National Post tells us:

When a B.C. couple discovered that the fetus their surrogate mother was carrying was likely to be born with Down syndrome, they wanted an abortion. The surrogate, however, was determined to take the pregnancy to term, sparking a disagreement that has raised thorny questions about the increasingly common arrangements.

Under the agreement the trio signed, the surrogate’s choice would mean absolving the couple of any responsibility for raising the child, the treating doctor told a recent fertility-medicine conference.
So it looks like we have multiple issues going on here:
  1. surrogate parenthood
  2. IVF
  3. encouragement of abortion
Where to start…

It seems that following the clear moral teachings of the Church would be so much simpler and would have avoided all of this.

Of course, that’s just not an option anymore, is it?

Wow.

It never ceases to amaze me how little human life means to some.

Wanting a baby to be murdered because he or she is a baby with Down’s? That has to be one of the most evil things I have ever heard of. God bless that birth mother for protecting that precious child! Hopefully, the baby will be adopted into a loving family that will help the child thrive.

This is one of the most evil things I have ever heard of. It reminds me of a line in “Jurassic Park” about science not just asking “can we?” but “should we?” God bless that precious, innocent baby! What a tragedy, how human life can be bought, sold and destroyed.

That’s sad. I know of a story of a woman who ended up getting an abortion because she was told the baby was going to have downs syndrome. The mother ended up dying due to hemorrhage in the uterus and it turns out the fetus really did not have down syndrome, either.

Gets worse…It is possible to create a synthetic sperm from a woman’s bone marrow and to fertilize the egg of another woman, thereby given birth to a child who literally has two mommies.

OMG. really?

That gives me the creeps.

I read about this on another “liberal” site and the comments there were absolutely atrocious. They were saying how it would be “selfish” and “wrong” to bring a DS child into this world since they would (not making this up) GET TEASED! That was one of their reasons for supporting the choice to murder! I was disgusted. This is how our society views life today. If that isn’t a “life unworthy of life” Nazi-esque concept then I don’t know what is. 😦

Life. Thats it. There is no other answer, “choice”, or “problem”. The father is responsible and the surrogate is beautiful. Whether or not he wants the baby has zero significance. The only time these things get confusing is when people want to deny truth, and try to bend Gods will.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think I have read (do not remember where) that up to 90% of children diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome are aborted in the US, and that percentage is even higher in Europe. When I was pregnant with my third child at 39, I was having prenatal tests ( I would want to know if my child was going to be medically fragile so I could prepare for it). Because of my “advanced maternal age” the Dr. informed me about the higher risk for Down’s. She said if the tests results were unfavorable, she would go ahead and “schedule me”. When I asked what she meant by that, it became clear that she automatically assumed that I would abort the child if it had DS. I switched to a different Dr. I wonder how many couples are frightened and cajoled by doctors and family members to kill the child?

My two sons are on the autism spectrum and have been in early intervention school with children with Downs. They are sweet, lovable kids and have much more potential than what is often assumed.

At a family function yesterday I met a young husband and wife and their four kids – three natural kids, one with DS, and a DS child they adopted from the Ukraine.

Apparently, in Russia (and related countries) any child born with any kind of defect – even those reparable with simple surgery – are completely shunned by society and parents are urged by societal pressures to leave their babies at the hospitals. If they are not adopted within a couple of years, they are placed in institutions for the rest of their lives. This family adopted a child after having their DS child, and it’s one of the happiest families I’ve EVER seen.

I don’t know the details of the adoption, but the woman spoke of her “team” and how helpful and positive they were throughout the lengthy process. What a grace to be given and what an inspirational, loving choice this family made!

I have a good friend with a DS daughter, now in her 40’s, who has also been the joy of their lives. It’s sadly true that most DS babies are now aborted in the US – and this at the encouragement of physcians and counselors.

There’s a lot to pray for in the world…

90%? Seriously?

That is so disgustingly horrifying. I have a cousin with Down’s Syndrome. I’m sickened…

People who don’t do IVF also abort Down Syndrome babies.

IVF doesn’t have anything to do with the decision to abort. In fact, I would suggest that maybe IVF children with Down’s Syndrome would be less likely to be aborted for two reasons:
  1. People do IVF generally as a last hope of ever having children.
  2. In many cases IVF patients are older, and less fertile. Incidences of Down’s syndrome increase with age.
However, I haven’t read or done a valid study on this hypothesis.

That is so tragic. I tremble for our Sinful, Degenerate World. And the people who apparently like it that way. 😦

News like these make me admire and respect Sarah Palin even more.

This also reminds me of something that happened to Nancy Grace (whom I personally DON’T care for but what she did is relevant here) when she was pregnant with her twins. Because of medical complications that could have possibly endangered her life, her doctors suggested that maybe “reduction” should be considered (meaning one of the babies aborted). She refused and later railed about it on her show. Turns out her delivery was Ok. 🙂

To be fair, I know some Liberals who are Pro-Choice, but even THEY would be sickened by this. So not ALL Liberals are like the folk on the message board written about here, to be honest.
SOME are like that, though, to be honest. And I pray for them.

Yes we have a true culture of death.

I would adopt any baby that anyone didn’t want because of a physical or mental handicap. And I am disgusted with anyone who would abort that baby.

What is next, we abort babies who have brown eyes and not blue? Or who are female and not male? Abort the 2nd child if we’ve already had one? Oh that’s right, Communist China already forces abortion if you’ve had your quota of one child.

Sometimes life here is just too depressing.

Dear God, if I could have carried my first two children to term I would have gotten down on my knees and praised You even if they both had Down Syndrome or any other “defect.”

I’ve taught children with Down Syndrome. They are usually happy, wonderful children. I’m so sad the surrogate decided to abort the child. The child deserved a life just as every person does. It seems that things in Canada are as bad as in the U.S.

Does your unborn “potential” baby have a “defect”? Is it not the gender you desired? Let’s run a test and if it turns out that it’s a girl we’ll just abort her. After all, she’s not a person until she’s born. Right? It’s certainly moral and it’s legal, too. If you aren’t sure we can wait until it’s time for her to be born and then do a PBA if you wish.

My Mom’s doctor wanted to abort me because she was anemic and had diabetes. When I was born and the doctor noticed I was a girl he offered to sell me as my parents already had two girls and no boys. That doctor would be perfectly fine with me being dead or earning some illegal money off me by selling me like a slave.

And things haven’t changed. My third child was carried to term, then illegally removed from my custody and most likely sold. I don’t know because I can’t find him.

Human life is so cheap when in the womb but when the baby is born she can bring in some big bucks.

I’m sorry if this is off-topic. I needed to vent a little. What happened will hurt me for the rest of my life.
