Cousin

There is a couple in my family that are first cousins. Their marriage is valid by legal and church standards. They have a beautiful and very healthy little girl. Some members of my family (not catholic) have had problems with their relationship. Most people are fine with it. I know that they have both lost lots of friends to be together.

They did go through genetic counseling. They were told that any couple in the world has a 2-4% chance of having a child with an abnormality. Cousin couples have a 4-6% chance. They do suggest that if your of European decent that your tested for Cystic Fibrosis, and other things if you are of other ethnic origins.

America is generally the only country that has such a huge social stigma on such things. To this day, it is still common practice to marry your cousin in say Japan.

Its common among certain sects of Hindus in India as well.

IMO…:yup: You might want to make it clear that you have told no one else how you feel and don’t plan to if she does not like the idea. It does show respect. You are a fine man, IMO!👍

I know it is not uncommon for cousins to marry, especially in some cultures. If genetically so bad, I would assume these cultures would have horrible health records. I don’t recall that they do.
 
Oh, and by the way… if you are married you HAVE married your cousin… I’m told, at this point in genetics, we’re at most, 52nd cousins.😉 Maybe that is why the word cousin isn’t used in the bible… We’re all cousins… And it was closer to the truth back then.
