I’m currently reading a book, “Coming Soon: Unlocking the Book of Revelation and Applying Its Lessons Today” by Michael Barber and I’m a little confused about what he explains is a Covenant Lawsuit…

It does not help that I’m a Spanish reader and that I’ve never heard about a “covenant lawsuit” before. Please explain and if someone can explain it in Spanish, even better.

Thank you

It seems that Scott Hahn has a lot of books that talk about Covenant Lawsuit… Are his books in line with catholic teaching? I’m tempting to buy and read his books but before I spend money and time reading his books, I want to make sure that he does not go against catholic teaching.

I know nothing about Covenant Lawsuit, but anything by Scott Hahn is authentically CATHOLIC. No worries there.
Peace.

I think I know what you’re talking about, but I’m a little bit confused by the words you’re using. Are you reading his book in English, or in a Spanish translation? (I didn’t start looking through my copy of the book, but I went to Google Books and did a search on ‘covenant lawsuit’ in the book, and couldn’t find one instance in which that term appeared.)

Can you give a page or chapter or section reference, where you find that term?

Thanks!

The phrase “Covenant lawsuit” shows up frequently in biblical scholarship.

For example the chapter “Isaiah 1 and the Covenant Lawsuit” by H. G. M. Williamson in the book “Covenant as Context: Essays in Honour of E. W. Nicholson” discusses the the opening chapter of the Book of Isaiah as a “covenant lawsuit”. God formally accuses his people and finds them guilty.

I don’t know what Spanish translations of the Scriptures do with the terms translated in English as “testament” and “covenant”, but generally the use of the word “testament” is inappropriate.

God entered into a contract - covenant - with His People which binds both parties and which sometimes requires mediation.

We see, particularly in the Old Covenant, one of the parties addressing the other party and alleging violation of the contract and demanding the remedy of compliance.

As the only Judge, God Himself the All Just settles these petitions (lawsuits).

A quick look in the New English Translation Bible turned up this translation:

"Hosea 4

The Lord’s Covenant Lawsuit against the Nation Israel

Hear the word of the Lord, you Israelites!
For the Lord has a covenant lawsuit against the people of Israel.
For there is neither faithfulness nor loyalty in the land,
nor do they acknowledge God.
2 There is only cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery.
They resort to violence and bloodshed.
3 Therefore the land will mourn,
and all its inhabitants will perish.
The wild animals, the birds of the sky,
and even the fish in the sea will perish."

The Lord’s Covenant Lawsuit against the Nation Israel - biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hosea+4&version=NET

“A number of the prophetic books contain a literary form which in recent years has been identified as a covenant lawsuit. Examples of this are found in Isaiah 1:2, 3, Micah 6:1-8 and Jeremiah 2:4-13. On the basis of His covenant with His people God is represented as suing His people before a court of law for breach of contract. In this procedure the witnesses of the covenant —heaven and earth— are duly called.” - presenttruthmag.com/archive/XXVIII/28p1-7.htm
