I have a good idea of how the RCC understands water as being Baptism etc.

I do not fully understand how this part (your statement above) of Roman
Catholic doctrine is supposed to work.
Maybe you can make it more clear, after I try to present what I understand is meant by your statement:

Water Baptism by the RCC cleanses all sin, including original sin from the recipient.
It causes a new birth (spiritual regeneration) in the recipient.
The recipient is justified by Baptism.

All of the above benefits are lost (except maybe the removal of original sin), if the recipient later willingly commits a mortal sin.

Baptism can no longer be applied again to re-birth spiritually.
Baptism can no longer be used again to cleanse sin or to justify.

Jesus’ Sacrifice benefits (merits) can no longer come through Baptism, but must now be applied some other way.
Hello,

You are correct in your understanding. Baptism redeems us from Original Sin, sanctifies us, and saves us/justifies us and makes us disciples of Christ. (Matthew 28:19) The removal of Original Sin is permanent. Once Baptism removes it, it cannot be put back, so the Sacrament of Baptism can only be given once. When you are baptized, the Holy Spirit moves into your soul. He makes it His temple and your temple is holy (sanctified) because He is living there.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.”

However, if a person sins a mortal sin after Baptism, the Holy Spirit moves out, He cannot live in a defiled temple. And if you do not have the Holy Spirit living in you when you die, then you are destroyed.

So, if you repent and confess and also make restitution (Ezekiel 33:12-20, Acts 26:20), then you are again sanctified and the Holy Spirit lives again in your soul. You are again justified/saved.

If you die with venial sins on your soul, then you are purified by a cleansing “fire.” Purgatory is what we call it, because your venial sins are purged from your soul. Nothing imperfect can enter heaven.

1 Corinthians 3:12-15 “Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

Galatians 6:7 “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”

However, Jesus is merciful and He will help us when we call on Him for help. We cannot make it to heaven on our own. That is impossible. We cooperate with His graces which He gives us through the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. This means that we must stay away from people or things that can cause us to sin.

Corinthians 15:33 "Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”

If we do commit a mortal sin, we must never despair. He is the good Shepherd who desires our repentance. He will welcome us back with open arms when we repent and confess.

Luke 15:7 “I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.”

Justification is what happens every time we turn our minds and hearts to God through intoning prayer to Christ, our High Priest, the only priest we now need since the sacrificial system of types and shadows are now gone that represented Christ’s incarnation as a human being which was sacrificed for all our daily sins. If we earnestly seek His forgiveness, "He is JUST and able to forgive us our sin(S).

Neither of them would be repented of if they died in them. However, you stated that “These are all the mortal sins.” This is where I disagree. Some mortal sins are adultery, fornication, murder, etc. You can repent from them.

Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Those are sins for sure, but not necessarily mortal. This is where Catholic views of God make no sense. A person loves God very much, lives a perfect sinless life then one day drinks too much without thinking, and gets drunk and dies of alcohol poisoning, or one day gets fed up and has an outburst of Wrath and manageees to get themselvees killed in the process. That person still loves God immeasurably and commited their entire life to Him but is human and as we all know humans make dumb errors. If drunkness or the outburst is mortal, than they go to hell because they didnt have time to be sorry much less repent. IF its mortal, they are not going to purgatory they are going to hell. but Scripture does not say that if you make a mistake you are disowned forever. It says God adopts you to his family. Do you have kids? If they make a stupid mistake to you leave them to live alone in the streets until they are sorry? No you Go get them, teach them why what they did is wrong, discipline them and they are never disowned.God will me merciful even if you die while you are sinning.

"What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying?
Eph 1:
3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5hec] predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9And hed] made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.
Galations 4:
1What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2He is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3So also, when we were children, we were in slavery under the basic principles of the world. 4But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, 5to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. 6Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,a] Father.” 7So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.
In no way is all this language about being family and adopted children of God for nothing. If the punishment for bad sins in a family was to kill or disown the child we would be outraged at the barbarism! No, God treats Christians as His actual Children and heirs. You dont get disowned and reinstated everytime you make a mistake, even big ones.

That does not mean you cant purposely decide to run away and disown God. You can sin over and over, refusing to accept correction (#2 in my list in the other post) or you can leave Gods Family all at once (#1 above). But both of those require a willfulness to NOT be a Christian #2 is jsut more subtle but takes a long time).

Also it doesnt mean you can do whatever you want… jsut becasue I dont disown my kid when she is disobedoesnt donts mean I dont discipline her! IT is the same with God and His adopted Children.
4(J)You have not yet resisted (K)to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; 5and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,
“(L)MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD,
NOR (M)FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM;
6(N)FOR THOSE (O)WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES,
AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES.”
7It is for discipline that you endure; (P)God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
8But if you are without discipline, (Q)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
9Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we (R)respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to (S)the Father of spirits, and (T)live?
(read all the way to 17 I ran out of space)
17For you know that even afterwards, (AJ)when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.
Easu did not make one sin and get disowned… his heart was hardened to God. He no longer cared.

Once you commit true MORTAL sin as Esau did, you are stuck:
Hebreews 6 bold mine:
4For in the case of those who have once been (J)enlightened and have tasted of (K)the heavenly gift and have been made (L)partakers of the Holy Spirit,
5and (M)have tasted the good (N)word of God and the powers of (O)the age to come,
6and then have fallen away, it is (P)impossible to renew them again to repentance, (Q)since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.
7For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those (R)for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God;
8but if it yields thorns and thistles,
it is worthless and (S
)close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.
2Peter 2 bold mine again:
20For if, after they have (BF)escaped the defilements of the world by (BG)the knowledge of the (BH)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again (BI)entangled in them and are overcome, (BJ)the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21(BK)For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from (BL)the holy commandment (BM)handed on to them.

Getting drunk and dying of alcohol poisoning would not be a mortal sin unless the person started out by saying to himself “I reject God and so I’m going to kill myself” - and even then it might not be, because God would know if the person was in his right mind or not.

A mortal sin requires grave matter, full consent, and full knowledge - the understanding that one is rejecting God.

For example - there is a huge difference between a person choosing to run over a child and one who accidentally runs over a child he didn’t see. In both cases the evil happened, but one is a sin and the other is just a tragic accident.

Thanks. 👍 I agree with your concise explanation. Those who don’t care if they are sinning and offending God are also rejecting God and so are also sinning mortally.

God knows our intentions. He is merciful. He loves us. He is a just judge.

But Paul warns over and over, that if we do those sinful things, then we will not inherit eternal life. It only takes one mortal sin to kill “life” in our soul because the Holy Spirit moves out when we defile our temples. We must be in a state of sanctifying grace (have the Holy Spirit residing in our souls) when we die in order to inherit eternal life. If He is not living in our souls when we die, then He destroys us (we are damned).
