Covering hair at Mass

Convert here. I wear a lace mantilla to Mass most of the time, I don’t freak out if I forget it and I don’t wear it when I feel it would draw undue attention.

It is a lovely tradition.
 
There’s lots of variety. Depending on how I’m feeling, I often wear simply a wide headband or wrap. I see knit caps fairly commonly around here too.

At my parish quite a few young ladies 17 -21, wear them as well as a few other women. I never find them to be a distraction and the practice is quite beautiful IMO.
 
My daughter veils. She attends church in Oxford, MS where she is a student at Ole Miss.
In my parish in St. Louis, there are a handful of women who veil. There is a latino family, the mom veils, and the little girls do as well. I love it!

I am 54 years old and haven’t veiled since I was a child and it was discontinued (late 60’s). I’ve never been moved to veil, but if the Holy Spirit were to move me in that direction, I would do so without hesitation.
 
I don my mantilla or a shawl or other head covering whenever I go to mass, Adoration, or sit before the Blessed Sacrament. I’m a convert, & it just makes sense to me that whenever I come into the Real Presence, I honor Him in this way. Initially I was inspired by one woman who wore her mantilla alone in the church, but she’d moved away. I started to wear mine, & I am finding that more & more women’re doing it. The numbers are not large, but they do appear to be growing…I get asked why I wear it, & I usually answer that I do it out of respect coming into the Real Presence.

I think it depends, too, on the church. I’d visited some churches out of state wearing the mantilla. I’ve gotten compliments on how pretty it is & where to get one, & sometimes, some disdainful looks from some. One man had told me that it was the first time in decades that he’d seen a mantilla worn in church, & he thought it was beautiful…
 
I would love to veil at Mass, but no idea where to get an appropriate veil from. Nobody does it at my church, but it’d be lovely to do, myself.
 
Depends on if you want an actual mantilla or not. Personally, I can’t get them to stay on my head. But I have acquired various cute headwraps and scarves just at regular stores.
 
With a mantilla you can get little combs that snap in your hair like extensions use. That keeps it on.

I don’t have nearly enough hair for that to work. I think it’s made it up to a half-inch and I really need a haircut.

The plain old hat is also an option.

I have to say, if ever felt I needed to cover my hair, (which I don’t) I most likely would wear a hat of some kind. If the idea is to cover your hair and not a fashion statement, I don’t understand the draw of mantillas. Wearing a piece of lace on my head will not make me feel more reverent than wearing a hat, or yes, a scarf.
 
I suppose one benefit to lace is that it is lightweight and breathable.
 
I do prefer solutions that can be kept in a purse though, especially for the less organized among us.
 
That makes sense.
(That’s what my car is for, I am not a purse carrier usually.😉 )

There is a website called Veils by Lily. I have 3 different ones from there, each with a small hair clip sewn in that snaps in place. It doesn’t budge, I love it, no more fidgeting with it, can kneel, get up, look down, and it doesn’t move. Highly recommend!
