Covering of statues and cross?

I know that during holy week, statues & crosses in church are normally covered with a purple cloth but when I went to mass last night, this was already done.

Is there any official protocol for this? Can this be done more than a week before Palm Sunday?
 
Yes it can.
From the Circular Letter Concerning the Preparation and Celebration of the Easter Feasts issued by Congregation for Divine Worship Saturday, 20 February 1988.
HOLY THURSDAY – MASS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
57. After Mass the altar should be stripped. It is fitting that any crosses in the church be covered with a red or purple veil, unless they have already been veiled on the Saturday before the fifth Sunday of Lent.

So is today the fifth Sunday of Lent? I thought that it was the fourth. :confused:

Our statues and Crucifix have been covered since Ash Wednesday.
 
Statues, images and crucifixes should be covered from First Passion Sunday on.

Correct. Here is a picture of the altar at St. Stephen’s that I took this morning after Mass.

EDIT: Sorry, I took this with my camera phone so not the best quality.
 
I just thought I would point out that if you went to an anticipated Sunday Mass last night (which was my assumption), then it would have been appropriate for the images to be veiled already since you were, indeed, already celebrating the fifth Sunday of Lent.
