Do you cover your statues and crucifixes in your home?

Just a quick question x

Was wondering about the same thing. Do you?

I have a crucifix in my bedroom but I’d rather not cover it. It reminds me of Our Lord’s Passion and gives me comfort

The point of the covering of statues is mortification, specifically of our eyes, because we are deprived of seeing beautiful art. If veiling deprives you of comfort, then it’s fulfilling its purpose.

No. It’d be tough to cover the crucifix that hangs on the wall. I have a beautiful art print of “Christ of St. John of the Cross” but I’ve taken it down so the kids don’t break it. We don’t keep statues.

Even back in the '50’s when covering the statues in church was common, was this ever practiced or recommended for the home? Have never heard of doing this at home.

I was thinking the same thing. Mu mother had a home “altar” and it never differed between seasons, although the parish covered all the statues, yes.

I have never heard of doing this at home but think it would be a meaningful gesture and I will do it this year.

I’ve never done it at home, but the tradition is still that it be done in churches - starting with the 5th Sunday of Lent. I think the main reason it’s rarely done in homes is due to the hassle of it. With three crucifixes and many religious icon paintings in my apartment, I don’t know how I would actually do this.

Yes !! Our living quarters has a home Shrine. Its set up like a small altar. I have covered all the statues and crucifixes with left over purple brocade cloth. I was going to buy some unbleached candles for Holy week but ran out of cash. 🤷

Been trying to fill my weeks with Lenten thoughts. Doing this really helps. That along with reading Fr. Bousuet’s book, “Lenten Meditations” and Fr. Z’s Lent Cast’s. 👍

No, I don’t cover statues and crucifixes at home. My niece’s son said that they looked like ghosts, an explanation she was like to concur with and encourage, but which I find dishonest and disrespectful.

In addition to covering the statues, and even the processional cross used at Mass, the altars – if you have an older church that has side altars – are usually stripped for utmost starkness and simplicity.

On Good Friday, which New Testament day that fulfills the Day of Atonement in the Old Testament, part of the ritual is to unveil a crucifix, in a rite that is called adoration of the cross – which of course refers to adoring Christ on the cross, not the wooden object.

Never really thought about doing this in my own home, but this is a great idea. I think I will get some purple cloth next year and do this.

I think its a good idea never thot of it i will try it starting 2day

Yes. I bought purple swatches a few years ago and cut one up to fit the Corpus. I think its a good Lenten custom.

In church it is not in Lent but in what used to be called Passiontide , the last two weeks prior to Easter .

In churches the crucifix is not to be covered up .

The purpose of covering up the statues is to focus on the uncovered crucifix in this time of year .
