Covid-19 & Mass dispensation

Last weekend was the first weekend that my parish celebrated Mass since the middle or March where parishioners could attend in person. Reservations needed to be made and we had to wear masks and social distance. Myself and my 2 teens attended. Technically we are dispensed in our diocese until August 15th. My teens hated wearing their masks and my daughter was worried about germs. I told them I would not make them go if they felt uncomfortable, but honestly I’m not sure what the right thing is to do. They have only been out of the house for a couple necessary appointments during this time, and we have been watching Mass via live stream. They have been outside with friends. Is it sufficient that we watch Mass and/or pray on Sunday or because Mass is offered should I be making a reservation? It is so engrained in me that we go to Mass if possible and I don’t want to treat this dispensation as an excuse. How do other parents handle this?

It sounds like you answered your own question. If you have a dispensation from the diocese, you’re not required to attend. Though depending on your economic situation, if you can afford to still make your weekly offering, perhaps online, then I’m sure your parish would appreciate it.

And actually, I’m not sure how full your Masses usually are, but with the reduced capacities that are being imposed on many parishes, if everyone did try to go to Mass, despite having a dispensation, then there simply would not be the capacity to meet that demand. By virtue of being there, someone else could not be. The diocese gave the dispensation for a reason.

I’m not sure how old your teens are, but I am skeptical of the notion that forcing, especially older, teens into going to Mass against their will is going to instill in them a lifelong love of religion and a devotion to God. Though you would know your own children better than anyone.

It’s a deeper issue than just going to Mass. since the teens are fearful of being out in public and germs then I’d stick with conversation, education and safety. If the kids were going to friends houses, or doing activities outside the home or going shopping then I’d say they should go to Mass. the dispensation covers you until august. While their fears may be grounded in safety you should be careful about the information they receive. When it’s safe, there needs to be damage control about how we look at others. Are they to be feared because a virus exists, or are they our bothers and sisters in Christ. A hunger for the Eucharist should be seen even if the decision not to go to Mass is made. If it isn’t, then you have some spiritual work to do with your kids.
