I’ll leave it up to the local Bishop. Assuming the individual is even Catholic…

Even assuming this person was catholic, being killed while praying is not the same thing as being killed for the faith. So many “martyrs” today are not martyrs at all. We should wait at least 50 years (perhaps longer) before even beginning the process of looking at someone for canonization. That way everyone associated with the person is also dead and can’t influence the process. Look at how JPII’s cause was opened and promoted by people he worked with. He is practically treated as the fourth person of the Trinity and yet the McCarrick report showed his guilt in covering up sex abuse (amid his countless other scandals as pope including promoting errors and engaging in public acts of apostasy).

The article explicitly states that the killer was outraged by the victim’s Catholic prayers. I’d call that proof sufficient that the deceased was Catholic and killed out of hatred for the Faith.

Sorry, but nope. The person likely would have been attacked even if he was protestant, or Orthodox, or jewish, or muslim. Not to mention the assailant could be mentally ill. There’s countless variables that need to be factored in. If someone put a gun to my head and told me to give them my money, and I’m praying to God and they get mad that I’m praying and shoot and kill me, that doesn’t make me a martyr.

I’m not trying to diminish this poor soul who was killed. God grant this person peace, and may he forgive the shooter, whatever his motive(s).
