As awful as this is, the article made me :rotfl: a few times…

cathcon.blogspot.com/2005/08/masses-celebrated-by-cowboy-priests.html

My first thought was “can we be sure these are Catholics?” But the raised hands and porcelain ware leave no doubt. 😃
Makes my blood boil! The faith becomes unpopular with the youth when we compromise, when we water down. There’s no shortage of “rebels” of those willing to die for a cause that doesn’t exist, yet the lay teachers and liberal bishops just keep compromising and watering down to the point that Christianity loses its idealism. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. And you ask why some sspx chapels are sooo full? Heretic as they are, they’ve never compromised!

Schismatic? Yes. Heretical? I don’t think that’s accurate.

When I see this kind of stuff it makes me not just want to vomit but it makes me want to Wamit!

I’ve got to say that if I only had to choose between 2 illicit masses such as the cowboy Mass or an SSPX Mass, I would choose the cowboy one. Why you ask? I would never go to something illicit that was attractive to me. The last thing I need is to be attracted to something that’s illicit. I would go an suffer at the Mass that straight out repulses me. Our Lord is there at either Mass but I’d choose to go to the illicit Mass that causes me the most pain and offer that suffering to God in reparation for sins against his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. I’m not going to the one where I get off easily.

In reality land, however, I’d just drive far like I do now and go to a licit Mass.

Quite accurate, actually. They speak of the Mass of Paul VI as an “abomination” and the post-conciliar Church as a “devil-inspired” religion. That’s heretical, not merely schismatic.

Also, careful with your links. That blog had links to another blog that mocked the old Holy Father.

All that said, the cowboy Mass is just plain appalling. I don’t think some of these abuses are things even the Holy Father can correct, though I think he has a will to do so. I think this will take a new generation of priests who instinctively cringe at the mere thought of such things.

Please can you advise which link causes concern on my blog

There used to be a TV show on the old WGN (long before nation-wide cable) called Barn Dance. This “set” reminds me of it. I half expected liturgical cloggers to come whomping out and tip-tapping away. Could’ve been Hee-Haw. And where is the comedy team? Oh, that’s right, this is a tragedy passign itself off as Mass.😦

IMHO, this one:

throneandaltar.blogspot.com/

See the editorial (not original to the blogger, I’m sure) that suggests that the post-conciliar Church has become “Saint McPeters.” I took it to mock the old Holy Father’s record number of canonizations and beatifications. Who would they kick out, Saint Maximillian Kolbe? Saint Edith Stein? One more person who wishes he or she was of more consequence, one more who’s “more catholic than the pope.”
Not you, naturally.

Very profound. Thank you.

I linked to one site with an interesting story. I didn’t play six degrees of links. I could link to many sites from which, if you clicked long enough, you could find something offensive. Give me a break.

I only played 2 degrees of links and got there. Granted, it seems to have no connection to Kevin Bacon, but I still think it’s a mockery of HHPJP the Great.

Generally, I am not in favor of a cowboy Mass, or a clown Mass, or a Mass with dancing girls. I don;t think you had this when you had the TLM, did you? My persoanl opinion is that it would be better to just go back to the TLM and the Gregorian chant exclusively (for the Latin rite RCC).

One more leap into the dark attempting to pose as logic. How is the rite connected with the abuse of the rite?

I am being told on another thread that this is allowed.
So why is everyone so upset? The church documents do not say that a service can’t have cowboys. I don’t like it, but people should be forgiving of other people’s taste.

I don’t wear a cowboy hat or boots but they do in Texas. maybe it’s a regional thing.

Because it is not allowed! First of all - I do not see any priest wearing a chasuble, which should be worn at all Masses. Secondly, at least in one picture, it was clear that there was no crucifix. Thirdly, even in the old cowboy movies I would expect men to remove their hats - it has always been the custom for men to have bare heads in church. Priests and deacons wearing hats in church is gross disrespect.

No one ever said that “a service” (it really grinds me to hear the Holy Mass referred to as a “service” - to me a service denotes something Protestant, not Catholic) cannot have cowboys, but even cowboys must be held to the standards of respect that we all know - no hats in church.

While that may appear to be some tacky stage settings in the background. Remember it is an outdoor Mass at a Festival. I don’t see why offering the attendees at a music festival or rodeo the chance to also attend Mass is such a horrible thing personally.

As someone who spent many years involved with horse shows and rodeo and other “cowboy attired” venues, this is the normal thing to wear-by EVERYONE. It isn’t necessarily a stunt or dressing up like clowns. It may be a bad attempt by the priests to fit in with the crowd or maybe it is a priest who happens to live in a region where hats are the norm.

During the Rolex 3-day here in Kentucky we often have riders come to Mass in breeches and boots and hunt caps. I’m glad they come and I hope none of the liturgy police take pictures and place them out of context on one of these doomsday websites. Those sites cause more scandal to the Church IMO than a few cheap hats on priests. (One of them actually looked like a very expensive Beaver Felt Stetson actually, he probably wears a hat regularly, maybe he had on boots and spurs too.) That site reminds me of a Catholic National Enquirer.

I too noticed the “service” remark. I think this person has stated that he is protestant. Probably meant no disrespect, it is a common mistake. I also thought that these were outdoor settings. While I agree that hats may not be the best idea, we are not given the full story with a few snapshots. I thought I saw chasubles. Maybe some at the altar were not priests. Maybe servers?
