Cradle. Went to Catholic elementary school, CCD classes after that. Left the church when I was 15 after my father died. Came back this year after a long wandering path through other religions. I am very happy to be home.
Hi Anne!
You, like myself, can be called a “revert”. I was born into a Catholic family. When I was at that critical age (around 12 - 14) in the mid sixties, my parents were going through their own crisis of faith. Even though I had gone to Catholic schools all my life, I was still poorly catechised. I fell away early in high school and lived a very immoral teen life. When I was in my early 20’s, I realized I needed to make a change. I joined the Mormon church in an effort to get some discipline in my life. Boy, did I get discipline! I was a Mormon missionary in Taiwan, and lived as a faithful Mormon for 11 years.

During this time, I realized that Mormonism was false. I left and lapsed into practical atheism. All during this unchurched 14 years, I yearned for a relationship with God, but after Mormonism I trusted no church.

Finally, through a series of miraculous occurances, I re-examined the Catholic faith, and found what I had never learned in my youth - the truth that Jesus established in the Catholic faith. I have been a joy-filled Catholic since 2000.

God love you,
Paul

P.S.: My parents are also now faith-filled joyful Catholics.

Life long Cradle Catholic.👍

Never fell away. I’ve always loved the Catholic Church I thank God every day for the beautiful grace of being allowed to grow up in Her wonderful embrace.
😛

❤️ Personally, I don’t care how a person comes to faith in the Catholic Church. I was baptized, received First Communion, Confirmation, went to Catholic high school and Catholic college but still fell away as an adult. I came back after a friend of mine took me to a Christian music festival which had representatives of many different faiths (Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran and Presbyterian). Somebody from the Baptist Church gave me a KJV Bible, which I actually read all the way through; I had never read the Bible previously. I repented of my sin first directly to God, then to my priest and have since joined an adult Sunday school class at my parish (Bible study), volunteered at an ecumenical mission meal for the poor which is held monthly at a Methodist Church (with Catholics, Presbyterians, and Lutherans helping out), and have become an EMHC.

I have a cousin whose husband did not practice any religion when she married him (she is a cradle Catholic). When his son was preparing for his first Communion, his father (the guy who had no religion) saw something there. He joined RCIA and was baptized, confirmed and received Holy Communion in the Catholic Church. Nobody “pushed” him to become Catholic, he saw from the examples of his family. Now, he is an usher, as is his son; and his daughter is an altar server. God knows what He is doing, and all we need to do is show a good example in how we live our faith. We can leave the rest to God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God will bring people into His flock. 🙂

Au contraire, ma souer! The KJV is notoriously mistranslated. For example in Luke 2:14 it says, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
However the original translation should be: Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will. (D-RV)
Why Do catholics Do That? p.26

This is just one example.
Yes, I agree that it has its flaws. But I would NEVER use the KJV in a Catholic bible study. When I read scripture, I don’t reach for KJV. I would use that if I’m talking to my Protestant brother or brother-in-law. Of course I would also use my Catholic bibles. I know when I am reading certain passages in KJV that those certain passages are not what the correct translation should be. I can discern.

My favorite bible is the Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible. Two of the reasons is because of Gen 3:15 and Luke 1:28. Those of you who know will understand what I mean. 😉 For many other reasons as well.

edit… btw, it’s not “ma souer” 😛 It’s “monsieur.” But I’m a “madame” anyway. You see my name in my siggy? 😃 I’m a she, not a he.

Same here!! 😃

Mine too!!😃

NO I actually DID mean ma souer which is literally, my sister. It was a take off from “au contraire, mon frere,” (my brother) the phrase that made Bart Simpson famous way back before The Simpsons even. See, I can remember whe he was still a little ORANGE kid who was trying to keep his Butterfinger from everybody!!😛

Yum, one of those sounds good right now!!

By the way, to stay on topic (somewhat 😉 ) I’m a convert of the Southern Freewill Baptist persuasion. I love being home in the Catholic Church!!!

No, she got it right - “ma souer” means “my sister.” 😉

“The best bible to use for a Bible study is the Navarre Bible (Old & New Testaments) . Now it costs a lot more because of the many books, but the commentary in those books is fantastic. And it uses the RSV-CE with corresponding Latin Vulgate on the same page. And of course the NAB bible is also good.”
Yes, the Navarre Bible is excellent for study. I have found it to be very helpful. I love the NAB as it’s the same translation used for the readings at Mass.

Blessings & Peace…

Hmm wouldnt call it New Age… more-so a a different variation of Platonism…and I thought Sikhism was older…

To answer your question firstly, who is to say Muhammed isnt correct? Then id be ignoring the prophet of God and God’s own words (as the qur’an says its written by him). What if Hindu is correct? Or taoism? Or shinto? or etc…

You see the problem? 😛 Everyone likes to think they are correct. I figure best bet is to see what I agree with and why and run with it. If I go to Hell, so be it, at least I had a happy life which I enjoyed 🙂 Besides…Alot of what jesus teaches is already in Platoism and Gnostiscm. No offence, but nothing about jesus was original :S

To each his own!

Except that He is the only god with a date in history - & why must He be original anyway ? Why is that so important ? Some of what He said can be found in inter-testamental Jewish writings - such as the pre-Christian parts of the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs. Why can’t He be prepared for by those who lived before Him ? There’s no pleasing people - if He’s not “original”, He’s scarcely worth attending to (so one view goes); alternatively, if He’s “original”, that means no one else gets a look-in to say anything memorable or good. So faith in Him is called “parochial” or some such thing; as though He monopolised all wisdom & goodness, rather than making it a possibility for others.

And how is the Origin of all things to start being “original” anyway 🙂 ?

I don’t recall Plato’s “crucified just man” being God, or dying for his enemies: unlike Jesus.

You definitely wouldn’t like hell - as every Christian on this thread can almost certainly guarantee. I would cut off my right arm to escape it - nothing could possibly be more terrible than to be without Christ for eternity; especially as it would be entirely one’s own fault. By the mercy of God, it is entirely possible to escape it - without cutting oneself in bits 😃

As for the question - I’m a convert 🙂 ##

Both are correct - the “good will” is that of God toward men; ISTM the AV-KJV is slightly less apt to be misunderstood, in this verse at least. “Good will”, eudokia in Greek, is used several times for the “attitude” of God. “Good pleasure” is perhaps preferable.

I use many translations in my Bible studies. I like the Douay-Rheims, KJV, NAB, NRSV, and NASB. I am a Catholic, but sometimes the Protestant translations help. For instance, I was at a coffee shop doing my Bible study homework. A fellow said that he did not believe that Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus. First, I read him the verses from Matthew and Luke from the NAB. He told me that it “didn’t sound like the Bible.” This felllow had been baptized as a Catholic, received Holy Communion and Confirmation, but he did not believe. I happened to have my KJV Bible with me, and I read to him the same verses from Matthew and Luke, and he said, “Oh I guess that is in the Bible.” I don’t know if he has come back to the
Catholic faith or not, but I do believe that using a Protestant Bible (with the “thees, thous, and thines”) was useful to lead him in the proper way of the Christian Faith. I hope that I will see this fellow sometime soon and will be able to ask him more about what he believes.

:rotfl: Why didn’t I figure that out?! :o 😃

The Holy Spirit definitely knows what He is doing because He brings people into the Truth. I was a so-called cradle Catholic but I fell away when I was in my twenties living on my own. God the Holy Spirit definitely knows what He is doing, because He brought me back (and not through anything I was doing on my own). Praise God! :bible1: ❤️

:yup: So true. I didn’t convert to a Protestant religion or anything. I still believed that this Holy Catholic Church was thee Church that Christ built and I still believed that Jesus is substatially present in the Eucharist. I guess I just got lazy and stopped going to Mass. My child used to be in Catholic school so I started going to Mass because there were times that there was a school Mass. But I still wasn’t going on Sundays. 😦

I believe that Jesus was with me the whole time and was showering His Graces on me all over the place. How else could I explain my compassionate disposition the whole time that I wasn’t going to Mass. 😦 I would forgive anyone that would hurt me. I helped anyone who needed help. People seemed to know who to call when they needed someone to talk to.

Jesus was right there with me the whole time. I’ve always told my child to pray to Jesus and Mary while I was too lazy to go to Mass.

It wasn’t until my Protestant brother asked me about Purgatory that I “woke up” and stopped being lazy. I got off my butt and got myself to church and went to Confession. Praise God! God is Good! God is Great!

I just have to keep praying for my brother and also my bro-in-law and my sister to come back home to the Catholic Church. :gopray:

God bless you. I will pray for your brother and brother in law. Please pray for a good friend of mine who I have known for about fifteen years. He was raised as a Catholic and received all the Sacraments, but right now says he is a Christian but doesn’t believe in any organized religion. I think the child-abuse scandel in the Catholic Church with the priests is what drove him away. I have tried to tell him that the majority of priests are good, holy men who would never hurt children (or anyone else, for that matter). I even took him to Mass at my parish, but he said he got notthing out of it. I really am best friends with this person and want him to be able to go to heaven some day, so please pray for him. His name is John. Thank you.

Cradle, but never really started trying to live my faith out until this past year, during Lent. I started praying the rosary daily and asked God to change me. He did!🙂

You bet!! 👍 I will pray for John.

Maybe you could tell him that he shouldn’t leave Jesus on account of Judas. Judas was there at the Last Supper too. That is why Jesus picked Judas as one of his original Apostles. There were going to be “traders” all along in the Church. Look at Luther. He totally rejected the teachings of the Church. He was once a Catholic Priest.

The evil one is constantly trying to attack our priests as to destroy the Eucharist. No Priest, no Eucharist. No Eucharist, no Christian. No Christian, no Church, no Eucharist. But I think the evil one forgot that Jesus said that that gates of hell will not prevail against His Church.

Cradle Catholic. School was kindergarten through grade 12. All Catholic. 1963 senior year we had a new priest. Young guy, and just out of the seminary. For the nine months of school, our religion assignment was to go to attend other churches, and then write a written report. Had to go to the library (no internet 😦 . Then he would have ministers, rabbi, etc. from the other faiths come to our class and answer our questions. It was a great experience, and it brought all of us closer to our own faith. That was a great experience for 1963, and it has always helped keep my faith strong.

Wow, what an experience for you. If only a teacher would’ve done that for us. 😉 Knowing other faiths definitely makes me appreciate my own.

Yes, it was great. It did help my faith to know about others. When we went to the other Church’s we had to wear our Catholic uniforms, and tell the ministers, etc. who we were and why we were there.
