Cranmer tables - Fr. Z

This is nothing compared to the destruction and iconoclasm that happened after the Council. Millions of historic churches were ‘renovated.’ This renovation often involved the destruction of priceless art and historical architecture.
 
Apparently a parish building in Malta took care of its own Cranmer table when part of the roof collapsed. No other damages nor injuries occurred. 😎
 
Fr. Z’s addiction to such shoot-from-the-lip flippancies as “Cranmer tables” is one of his least attractive characteristics. While he claims to recognize the Novus Ordo as valid, he seems to imply that any church with a simplified ad populum altar is in heresy.
 
It’s just always a mystery to me to think that a free-standing altar would have been a heresy in 1959, but not ten years later.
 
When somebody posts a picture of exactly what’s getting removed out or bolted down, I’ll be able to give my opinion on whether I think it looks better or not.

Meanwhile, I’m not going to get myself in a tizzy because Fr. Z has a problem with a table being brought into a church.

I don’t think he implies that simplified altars are heretical. Rather, I think he prefers the rich symbolism and historical significance of traditional altars. Nothing wrong with that. I think he’d voice the same concerns if an ancient ‘ad populum altar’ was discarded in favour of a hastily constructed and ill fitting ‘ad orientem altar.’ I think Father Z’s message is one of conservation.
 
I just looked at about 20 before and after pictures of that Chair of St. Peter Bernini altar.

Maybe I’m just an architectural Philistine, but I’m not seeing much of a difference.
 
I just Googled Chair of St Peter Bernini altar.
There are a lot of trad blogs that have images of the original altar to compare with the more recent pictures of it with the table on many sites.
 
I just read Fr Z and I am puzzled. Is he trying to set up a wailing commotion to parallel that at the exorcism of the Pantheon?

It seems a little counter to his position…

Thank you! Ok, now I see it. The entire original alter arrangement is gone. There is now nothing at the base of the chair. Instead, 20-30 feet in front of the chair is a freestanding altar table.
