My 14 year old dd needs a new bed. She suggested getting a hammock w/stand. She thinks it would be cool. She’s pretty creative.

We can afford a bed–she just wants something different.

Is that crazy? Anybody ever try it?

No I don’t think it’s crazy, it might be kind of cool. My only concern would be back support, she’s still young so you don’t want her to start having back pain. Do they make hammocks for every night use? I’ve only seen them in people’s back yards:blush:

I say get the young lady a bed, the newness of a hammock will wear if in about 3 nights. And most girls her age sleep in a fetal position do they not? I don’t know how you do that on a hammock.

Get a bed - she has to live with her spine for the rest of her life. Don’t go messing with it now.

Get a hammock for her for her birthday for the back yard. 😉

I have a hammock in my backyard, and while it may be relaxing for a little while, sleeping in it is really uncomfortable. It’s not easy to roll over on your side. You risk being dumped on the ground when you try to change positions, and if it’s on one of those stands and you land on the bar, yeowch!!

As a result, you’re stuck in that concave position on your back, which I find really hard on my knees since they are locked backwards in an awkward position.

I would be concerned about how sleeping like this all the time would affect her posture since she’s still growing.

I agree with Bama - she’d be over it in a few days and begging for a real bed again.

I’d get her a bed. She’s still growing and having decent back support at her age is important. I do think a hammock is a cool idea as a replacement for an armchair, though. 👍

I think it’s really cool, but I can’t see it being comfortable in the long run. And I’d be afraid of falling out of it in my sleep!

I agree with everyone else re: back support and comfort. But I know they make hammock “chairs” that can be hung from the ceiling. I’m sure they also come on stands… is there room for a bed and one of those?

Oddly enough I have some experience here. Our now 13 year old got a hammock on a stand for Christmas 2 years ago. She gets it out when kids come over and they do sleep in it. I wouldn’t recommend it for every night use, however. When I go check on them they look all cramped up.

I think a bed is best, too. Maybe she can pick out her bedding design and let her creative side show in that way! 🤷

Might I suggest she loft her bed? It is common in college dorms and a lot of people showcase their creativity with how they loft it and how they decorate the loft. The standard loft I saw during my time in the dorms had a desk and work area below it, some had couches and tvs, but I see no reason why a hammock couldn’t hang there instead. That way she could have the hammock in her room for “coolness” and have a bed for a good night’s sleep.

A hammock would be great if you lived in a very warm climate. The thing here is you have nothing but air under you, not mattress, nothing for keeping heat in.

Just one simple thought about a hammock.

I have a friend who let her son do this - he is a senior in high school, and their bedrooms are VERY small in their house. This gives him a study area below with his bed up above - he did a great job arranging everything himself, and it looks great!!! But he is a VERY neat and tidy kid, and has to have everything JUST PERFECT.

I would be concearned that the novelty would ware off in a few days.

My brother did this too. He built a loft bed sort of thing. He had a mattress on the top but underneath, he set up a hammock. He slept in the hammock for about … 3 day then started sleeping in the bed. He eventually took the hammock completely out and built a desk under it. It was pretty cool… but he never let me play in his room.

I was on vacation in the Mayan Riviera a few years ago, and on a tour, the guide was Mayan and was describing Mayan life and culture. He said they sleep in a hammock every night and it is a very comfortable sleep. I guess if that’s what you are used to, it’s a good night’s sleep.

Just my 2 cents! 🙂

our 19 year old is an ultra sensitive kid. for a while, i’d considered getting him a hammock for sleeping because it was widely recommended by parents with kids with strong tactile sensitivities.

i came very close to purchasing an expensive hammock but my friend offered us a nearly new queen size mattress. he’s much more comfortable on it than his old mattress.

we built him a loft and his room became a pretty cool afair, small as it is. lately, he’s been talking about hanging a hammock ***under ***the loft. he’s lose some useful space, there, though. (and i’m not buying the hammock.)

i don’t think i’d worry too much about the back support. some very healthy and limber cultures sleep in hammocks with no physical detriment.

the cold and the fading novelty would be my concerns.

so… can you loft it and hang a hammock from inside the loft?

If you do loft the bed, PLEASE, please be careful and make sure there is a safety rail all around the bed. I had a college–approved dorm loft my freshman year; it only had a rail around the head area, for some dumb reason, and I fell out in my sleep and ended up fracturing four vertebrae in my lower back. Not. Fun.

Needless to say, none of my kids are getting bunk beds. Ever. :o

Sadly, a loft won’t work. She has an attic bedroom with very low sloping ceiling.

Probably we’ll just go with the bed. She does like to sprawl out. Thanks for helping me think it out.

Then definitely give her some creative (name removed by moderator)ut into how her room is decorated. I remember my sister being a young teen and wanting to paint one wall in her bedroom BLACK. Not even all four walls… but my mom opposed and now my mom regrets it saying “it was just paint”.**🤷
