Hello!

Could someone help me to understand what Second Vatican Council mean by this phrase:

“Man, who is the only creature on earth that God created for his own sake…”

more precisely on “created for his own sake”…

Thanks,
Filipe.

I’m not sure. I would like to think that it means we were created because God wanted us to be. I’m not sure because really we are no different from anything in creation:unneeded. To me this implies that we were needed in the cosmos in things or that we are intrinsically something of beauty that God just really wanted to make. But this is not unique to humans so I can’t tell what they really meant. Could you provide the whole section it was in or where it is found because some context would really help to understand this 👍

Perhaps it is a matter of context that makes it hard to understand by itself.

I remember what the catechism said:

Why did God make me?

God made me to know him, to love him and to serve him in this world, so that we can be happy forever with him in the next.

(I think I got that right).

I also believe He loves us with an infinite love, because He is love, and wants to share that love with us forever.

Oh, I’m really sorry for that…

Hey, listen I’m from Brazil you know, but even in the Catechism I have (in Portuguese) is difficult to understand.

So… If I understand it means that: God created us for Him and that everything else was created not for exactly for Him. (e.g. because we can eat animals the animals was made for us instead of for God)…

Thanks…
Filipe.

Yes, we are above the creatures, and they were made for us, although everything in His creation glorifies him!

Nice to have you here at CAF!

Thanks! I got it!

Is my pleasure to be here… I’ve learn a lot… I listen to CAL almost every day too. When I was in trouble with my faith, was you guys that help me out.

So, one more time…
God Bless! 🙂

“God created man for his own sake” means “God created man because the existence of man is a good thing in itself, and did not create man to in order that man may be a good thing for another creature, such as for example plants were created to be food for men and animals”.

Everything in the natural world exists for the sake of something else, but to avoid circularity and infinite regress, there has to be one thing that does not have something else for the sake of which it exists, and which therefore is that one thing for the sake of which everything else exists; this one is man, and the whole natural world from quasars to tapeworms exist for the sake of man.
