Creating his own Eucharist Prayer

Just a few questions I have for you. Your terminology seems a little strange ie the Providence of Milwaukee ???
It is the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee. If you are talking about providences that were established by the USCCB; Milwaukee happens to be in Province V.

I happen to reside at St Benedict’s Abbey in Benet Lake; and I would be interested to know what parish you are talking about, because there must be more to the story than has been expressed so far.

I am interested in what kind of response that you receive from Archbihop Dolan.

How should I best handle a priest who creates his own version of the Eucharistic prayer even to the point of slightly altering the words of consecration? He changes other words during the Mass or adds his own reflections at times, but at the Eucharistic prayer, none of the four options for the prayer is recognizable. I wonder if others are not aware of this because we no longer have books in the pews with which to follow the Mass. This priest started out making just a few alterations and now it is to the point of being a totally ad-libbed version of his own. Thank you for your help with this.

I hope you come back MCMiller and tell us what your research is on the various Eucharistic Prayers [was your priest using a real prayer ot not?] and if not [how did your meeting go with your priest] …

Hail Wikipedia! full of, umm, stuff. Provinces are a little more basic than episcopal conferences; we inherited them from the Romans! I thought giving the province would be more nifty since I move between the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and its suffragan Diocese of Green Bay.

I will send you the parish in a private message. I am a little to tired to judge the charitableness of saying directly on the forum.

There’s really not much more to it other than Fr wants to do his Mass (well, everything in the parish but he is the boss… buying techno gadgets [fancy copiers and things] while laying off staff which I suppose is a little more to it) one way which I, and others, who don’t see eye to eye with him.

Edit: That last paragraph is grammatically horrid, but I think one can get what I was trying to say. Goodnight!

I am fairly certain it is going to come to this. People who are smarter than I am have talked with Father (one is even a theological professor [if that means anything these days ]).

In the end I would like to say that this was resolved charitably and I think I can best do this by doing all I can (as quickly as I can do it) before involving the bishop.

I would like again to urge you to approach the priest at least one more time, with one or two others, before you take the matter to the Bishop, (see Matthew 18:15ff.) You mention a professor and others who have similar concerns. Maybe a small group, not so large as to be intimidating, but two or three persons together, can form the kernel from which some good can grow in relations with this priest.

At the very least, a meeting with others present will provide the “witnesses” who can verify what is happening and what the priest’s responses to you have been, if you must eventually take the matter to the Bishop (or beyond).

Thank you and yes, I will post an outcome. To be honest, this forum has really challenged me to think this through thoroughly. I am aware that there is quite a bit to consider before arriving at a conclusion on a priest’s practices. If he agrees to a meeting, I want to be well prepared and composed…it is one thing to discuss it with all of you and another to meet with him! I will implore the aid of the Holy Spirit.

Yesterday, he left out the forgiveness of sins part during the consecration of the Precious Blood (‘that will be shed for you and for all so that sins will be forgiven’) and today he move the idea of ‘for all’ (well, for many… but let’s stay on track ) to the doing this ‘in remembrance of me’ part. Today we also had a made up penitential rite.

Some of you might be cringing at that, but it is way, way, way, way better than previously. We can at least tell what part of the mass he is doing. I think I’m done crying too, so that’s good.

I’m honestly curious why he’s having a hard time… doesn’t he have a copy of the Sacramentary?! How hard can it be to read the prayers from it? Anyway, I’ll keep praying for him.

He wants to give it meaning by using his own prayers, but I’ve seen a priest who never opened the Sacramentary for the Eucharistic Prayers that has done a better job adlibing.

Then, that is clearly wrong because not only does he explicitly violate RS, he may actually be invalidating the Mass by his actions.
