I saw this story on ABC World News this week and I was just beside myself with anger and sadness and disgust. I can’t begin to imagine how horrible it was for these parents to see their little girl dying, but I can very well NEVER see myself ever considering creating and killing over 100 embryos for one perfect DNA match to save her life.

Here is the story and the comments from viewers. HERE

Did anyone else see this story? I was really surprised to not see anything out here about it, unless I missed it.

some tough stuff to have to deal with. I dont like the idea, or practice for that matter, of genetic engineering when it comes to humans (I kinda like the re-tooled veggies). I think that if the birth (not abortion) “left-overs” can be used for medical pruposes, ok, but not if the creation of embryo’s is just to harvest stem cells then they are destroyed. I also think its very vain, pridefull and arrogant to genetically engineer your child. Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should, somethings should just be left to God’s will.

I hadn’t seen the story, but just now read your link, as well as the first page of comments. Very few of the commenters opposed the process, and most praised it, condemning those who had objections as lacking compassion. I’m afraid that this is a sign of the times.

We will begin creating children as living parts warehouses, or biological material sources. Now it’s true that the lucky one who gets to be born is also brought up by the family. But the unlucky ones are frozen or discarded.

I can’t help but wonder how these spare parts children will feel when in the future they discover, as they inevitably will, that they would never have been born except that their sibling needed their cord blood. And when they find out their their siblings who had the wrong qualities, were not so fortunate.

The same thing crossed my mind as well. What if this little boy grows up to be pro-life and realizes that so many of his siblings had to die before he was chosen? I can’t imagine living with that knowledge. Or even the sister - to think that your parents destroyed over 100 siblings…totally unthinkable to me how she could live with that?

But sadly these parents have surely raised two more pro-choice people into this world who will continue their family heritage of justification for their actions. And on and on that legacy will go…and how many more will die as a result?

I don’t know, but it seems to me that the younger generation is becoming more pro-life. At least that’s my impression. They, unlike my generation, when pondering the issue of abortion or embryo selection, or selective reduction, must have the thought: “It could have been me.” In an abortion culture which has already resulted in the loss of perhaps an entire generation of children, they have an even more poignant incentive to think about those who have been lost: they were their brothers and sisters.

It part of the culture of ‘perfect life’. Society wants desperately to stay alive, but only perfect life. No sickness, no deformaties, no trouble, no death–except of course for the sick, deformed, or otherwise unwanted.

No parents wants to see their child suffer. But it seems to never have occurred to the familes in the story (or the commenters), that the children who were dying would go to heaven. Without a hope of heaven, I can see why these parents would go to such extremes to keep their child alive. And why they will probably encourage others to have testing and abort a child who might have this disease. They see only this life and so they try to make it like heaven–it must be free from pain and last as long as possible.

All we can do is pray.

This is thoroughly distressing. Even before my conversion to Catholocism, when I was Buddhist this type of thing would never be acceptable. Whether there is afterlife or not. It’s not a reasonable idea or solution from any religious or humanist standpoint. I sure wish I knew what to do so that this stuff would cease going on. For now, I can only pray.

Father…Please forgive and comfort these parents, the doctors, researchers and all others involved. They know not what they do.

Would Christians, (and anyone else who wishes), join me in a rosary? Post however much you’d like, then some other brother or sister pick it up from there…

The peace of our Lord be with you all,
Steven

The First Sorrowful Mystery

The Agony in the Garden
(Spirit of Prayer, Sorrow for Sin)
Then he said to them, “My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me.” He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:38-39

Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day, our daily bread
and forgive us our tespasses as we forgive those who trespass
against us
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil

(someone please begin the first decade)

Then he returned, and finding Peter and the others asleep, he said, “Could you not watch with me even for one hour? Stay awake, and pray that you will not come to the time of trial.”

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

****HugeDomains.com Sorrowful Mystery - The Crowning with Thorns **

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying:" Hail, King of the Jews!" And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.* (Mat 27,27-31) *

You hit it on the head. My twins and two of my siblings were aborted.
I saw a TV drama once in which a teenaged girl was pregnant and tried to give herself a miscarriage. It came out that it was her father’s baby. That led to a parent-teacher conference, and the parents explained that the mother, who was unable to have more children, desperately needed a blood donor who was a 50% DNA match. The family fertilized the mother’s egg in a dish and put it in the daughter. The issue was supposed to be controversial, whether it was right or wrong. I thought it was a no-brainer. They got their child pregnant so the baby could be a blood bank for the mother? And expected her to go through high school with her mouth shut about it?Sick.

Each of these babies created and then rejected by their parents are no different then if the parents would have become pregnant and aborted the children. To kill one child to save another is not something that many people would consider.

I can’t imagine having killed one child much less 40 or more.

Pray for the all the children, sick, born and rejected and pray for the parents also.

Aside from the story itself I was just totally shocked that I was (the last I checked) the ONLY person to make a comment about the story from a pro-life perspective. Out of all the people who watched that piece and had issues with it, no one felt it necessary to voice that opinion.

Sad when it happens - even more sad when no one says anything about it.

They wanted my real name and my home address when I went to register for the site. Forget it - I don’t need the potential hassles. Everyone who knows me, knows my opinion of abortion.

Yes, I noticed that too. It’s pretty scary that this just seems to be publicly accepted and approved.

I am confused. You reference a putative place called heaven… so wouldn’t be better if for the embryo’s eternal souls if they were discarded as they would go to heaven? I am not being callous, but why should we respect the embryos if they would be freed from a life of suffering (and a usually naturally painful death)? They are embryos that haven’t differentiated, so they cannot suffer.

You say that no parent wants their child to suffer. Do you think this is “love”? One should emphasize the words “their child.” You have to remember that these emotions evolved so parent’s can preserve their own genes by transmitting it to their offspring. The aforementioned love is only a means to an end: the propagation of genes. It does not fulfill the utilitarian goal of eliminating suffering.

‘Thou shall not murder’. What gives us the right to take a life to make another better? What makes one life any less worthy than another? What gives one human the right to decide if another dies. We are playing God by choosing who gets to live and who gets to die.

If this carries on, next we will be killing the disabled and the elderly.

I could only retort that killing them would cause suffering and violates their interest to survive. Embryos cannot suffer nor have interests.

Does a newborn baby have interests? Could it suffer if someone put it to death by anathesia? The answer to this i think is no, so would it be wrong to kill a new born child? Would it be wrong to kill a mentally disabled person by non painfull methods?

I do not know what you mean by “mentally-disabled person.” If you mean a person with, for example, Down syndrome or someone whose IQ is below a particular number. Laconically, no: they have the capacity to suffer.

In cases such as Terri Schiavo, we should respect their interests. If she wanted to say alive before she was incapacitated (as she was a in persistently vegetative state).

I’ll let Peter Singer answer that:
Q. Elderly people with dementia, or people who have been injured in accidents, may also have no sense of the future. Can they also be killed?
A. When a human being once had a sense of the future, but has now lost it, we should be guided by what he or she would have wanted to happen in these circumstances. So if someone would not have wanted to be kept alive after losing their awareness of their future, we may be justified in ending their life; but if they would not have wanted to be killed under these circumstances, that is an important reason why we should not do so.
