Now these same Protestants have lots of material that shows a universal flood is in line with topography and geography of earth today… Now if Protestant scientists come up with the opposite of ‘lay scientists’ then science itself we see is open to different interpretations.
As far as I’m aware, all of such science is junk science, and completely nonsensical. I’d be greatly surprised if you provided some legitimate evidence of the flood : ).
Science is not ideologically driven. If there was evidence of a global flood, it would be accepted in the scientific community. There is not, so it is not.
I was skeptical before my research, but I looked it up anyway. I was hoping beyond hope that M and M did not stand for “Michelson and Moley…” but here we are. That experiment disproved the existence of the Aether. It had NOTHING to say about the Earth’s orbit around the sun. Please tell me how it did. And Einstein’s theory of Special Relativity is an astounding feat of intellectual genius. It is just as astoundingly accurate, and in what way is it absurd??
There is no faith involved. It is based on pure evidence. What is the faith you speak of in this case?

He might have been referring to Airy’s Failure.

‘There had to be an explanation [for the Airy and M/M test results that could not find evidence for a 30kms/s movement].** Either the earth was motionless with respect to the ether,** or the earth dragged the ether with it, or something. All possible explanations seemed highly unlikely, and for nearly a quarter of a century, the world of science was completely puzzled. It took a scientific revolution to explain the matter, so that the Michelson-Morley experiment is perhaps the most important “failure” in the history of science.’ — Isaac Asimov: Chronology of Science & Discovery, p.388

O.K., here above Asimov shows us that the ‘progress’ of modern cosmology is ideologically based and not empirically founded. He does this by telling us they rejected perfectly valid interpretations of two empirical tests showing the earth does not orbit the sun, two readings that they could/can not falsify. He then admits it took a ‘scientific revolution’ to solve their problem for them.

‘The German-born physicist Albert Einstein supplied that [an explanation for the M/M failure] in 1905. He began with the assumption that the speed of light in a vacuum would always be the same, regardless of the motion of the light source relative to the observer. This is what Michelson and Morley observed, but Einstein maintained that he was unaware of the Michelson - Morley results when he worked out his theory.’ —I. Asimov, op. cit., p.389.

So, here we have it from the horse’s mouth Buffalo, an ASSUMPTION dismisses a valid geocentric result from science.

He might have been referring to Airy’s Failure.
That experiment that is called Airy’s “failure” only by geocentrists; that experiment which destroys the notion of the aether as a propagation medium for electromagnetic waves, and which shows the earth’s annual movement relative to the direction of stellar light propagation? That one?

What is false science. Abiogenesis is one false science. You can only get life from life in real true science. In the false science you obviously believe in abiogenesis has had to occur for life to be according to the ‘scientific’ Big Bang heliocentric evolutionary scenario. That is life from inorganic matter (with a little gas here and there, add water and a dart of sunshine).

True science are the results of the Airy experiment and the Mitchelton & Morely experiments that were the only two scientific experiments ever conducted to determine the relative movements of the sun, earth and stars. These scientific experiments indicated the earth is fixed, not the sun and stars.

Next juliamajor you enter the world of metaphysical assumptions - whether our world is geocentric or heliocentric. Don’t you know that cosmic movements are relative? Owning a telescope or looking into one will show you the exact same thing whether you accept the heliocentric heresy or the geocentric revelation. As regards Church astronomers ‘coming up with any earthshaking news about geocentrism’, well no, because looking into telescopes have nothing to do with relative motion between earth and sun.

Are Church documents over 500 years null and void now?

What about recent documents? Gosh juliamajor, I didn’t know there were any. Could you please cite them for us ignoramuses, we are a little behind the times. If you can show me ONE official Church document that abrogates that outdated 1616 decree I will concede to it llike a good Catholic.
Now now we mustn’t get our panties in a twist. You know that church documents aren’t abrogated. It’s just not done- so your premise is false to begin with.Have there been other documents on scripture in the 2oth C.Yep.Do they abrogate former documents-nope.Do they expand and clarify? Yep.Divino Spiritu Afflante(pre Vatican ii by the way)clarify and expanded on Proventissumus Deus(sp?) Dei Verbum bythe the Pontifical Biblical commission-explains it further. If you want to live in another century safe and sound, and not dealing with the present- hey that’s up to you.But please don’t pass off bogus science as piety or presenting the past as some idolized sanctuary. It was not perfect.I was there so I know it was not this perfect image that people have created in their minds eye.People put blinders on to see what they want to of the past.People like to dwell in the past so they don’t have to deal with the present or the future. They can shun society and let it go to hell in a handbasket and feel very secure in their righteousness.No. Christians are not to sit around and pat themselves on the back for being above the common lot. We are supposed to be out and about spreading the Good news.
Get into the trenches- be the Church Militant. Sitting and dreaming of the past does not help - it wasn’t so great.

Basically, the motion of the Earth has been long established by other means. The M/M experiment has nottttthing to do with the motion of the Earth. The experiment used an already known fact (that the Earth MOVES) to test another theory, the existence of an Aether. Since there was a null result, it was determined that the Aether was not in existence. Because the Aether was fairly well accepted beforehand, there was a “Scientific Revolution” to account for new experimental results. This is because science IS NOT ideological. If it was, new evidence would have been ignored and the idea of the Aether would’ve continued to hold sway. But since new evidence was taken into account, and thousands of hours of work done 'round the world utilizing this new evidence, the non-ideological nature of science can be plainly seen.

The M/M experiment really will not be helping you here. At all.

It has also been pragmatically argued since Churchmen adopted the heretical Copernican or cabbalistic interpretation of Scripture that the Bible is not intended to teach us the ways of nature, but the way to eternal salvation. This is a principle spawned by the hermetically inclined Cardinal Caesar Baronius, who not only claimed in his Annales Ecclesiastici of around 1610 that Hermēs Trismegistus was one of the pagan prophets heralding the birth of Christ, but in the wake of the Galileo affair gave posterity the now famous often used quip ‘the Bible is not intended to teach us how the heavens go, but how to go to heaven.’ Now whereas this could be so, the hard fact is that throughout the holy Books there are many cases where facts of nature are mentioned or stated, both implicitly and explicitly. There are occasions where the Scriptures disclose laws and facts of nature some thousands of years prior to man’s own discovery of them. What really matters of course is that whatever the Bible says and truly means is the truth of it, whether the matter is of natural things or of divine things. We know this because this is what the Church has always taught. The most recent and accurate reiteration on this very point is to be found in Pope Benedict XV’s encyclical on Scripture: Spiritus Paraclitus of 1920, where he declares :

‘Yet no one can pretend that certain recent writers really adhere to these limitations. For while conceding that inspiration extends to every phrase –and indeed every word of Scripture– yet, by endeavouring to distinguish between what they style the primary or religious and the secondary or profane element in the Bible, they claim that the effect of inspiration –namely, absolute truth and immunity from error- are to be restricted to that primary or religious element. Their notion is that only what concerns religion is intended and taught by God in Scripture, and that all the rest –things concerning “profane knowledge”, the garments in which the Divine truth is presented- God merely permits, and even leaves to the individual author’s greater or less knowledge. Small wonder then, that in their view a considerable number of things occur in the Bible touching physical science, history and the like, which cannot be reconciled with modern progress in science.’

**Right Julia, show me a DOCUMENT then of the Church that denies the 1616 decree defining and declaring the Copernican interpretation of Scripture as permissable. **

Give me some passage that says it, not rhetoric which you are good at with your ’ we mustn’t get our panties in a twist’ which really doesn’t apply to me.

What evidence does this “professor” have? Sorry, but authority means nothing here.
Now you logos: My post was in reply to

’My wife is a geologist, believe me the world was not created around 7000BC’ put up by Fox

If you were really interested in intelligent debate you should have replied to Fox’s post not mine. It was Fox who put up his wife as authority, I merely eliminated her infallibility with a Professor of Nuclear physics. That is good debate for those interested in good debate. But there are a lot of posters on CA who excell in useless, meaningless rhetoric and destroy and undermine good debate.

Go read your post again Logos and see how stupid it looks. I provided the site of the Professor’s life work with the empirical method, a man who has written endlessly on his discipline and you come along and ask what ‘evidence’ does he have. Well go read his books, read his site, and that’s how you get to know. What do you want me to do, reproduce his findings on nuclear remains here?

Then you say 'Sorry, but authority means nothing here.’

What does that mean Logos?

JOHN PAUL II
Address at Meeting with Rectors of Academic Institutions

Torun, Monday, 7 June 1999
  1. We are meeting today in Torun, in the “the City of Copernicus”, in the University named after him. The discovery made by Copernicus, and its importance for the history of science, remind us of the ever-present tension between reason and faith. Although Copernicus himself saw his discovery as giving rise to even greater amazement at the Creator of the world and the power of human reason, many people took it as a means of setting reason against faith. Which of these is the truth? Are reason and faith two realities which are necessarily mutually exclusive?
The split between reason and faith was the expression of one of humanity’s great tragedies. It has many causes. Particularly, beginning in the Enlightenment period, an extreme and one-sided rationalism led to the radicalization of positions in the realm of the natural sciences and in that of philosophy. The resulting split between faith and reason caused irreparable damage not only to religion but also to culture. In the heat of controversy it was often forgotten that faith “has no fear of reason, but seeks it out and has trust in it. Just as grace builds on nature and brings it to fulfilment, so faith builds upon and perfects reason” (Fides et Ratio, 43). Faith and reason are like “two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth” (ibid., Proemium). Today we need to work for a reconciliation between faith and reason. As I wrote in the Encyclical Fides et Ratio: “Deprived of reason, faith has stressed feeling and experience, and so run the risk of no longer being a universal proposition. It is an illusion to think that faith, tied to weak reasoning, might be more penetrating; on the contrary, faith then runs the grave risk of withering into myth or superstition. By the same token, reason which is unrelated to an adult faith is not prompted to turn its gaze to the newness and radicality of being . . . The parrhesia of faith must be matched by the boldness of reason” (No. 48). Ultimately this is the problem of man’s inner unity, ever threatened by the division and the atomization of his consciousness, which lacks a unifying principle. In this area nowadays a special task awaits philosophical research.
  1. . In this situation it appears imperative to reaffirm a basic confidence in human reason and its capacity to know the truth, including absolute and definitive truth. Man is capable of elaborating a uniform and organic conception of knowledge. The fragmentation of knowledge destroys man’s inner unity. Man aspires to the fullness of knowledge, since he isThe men and women of science and of culture have been entrusted with a special responsibility for truth - to strive for it, to defend it and to live in accordance with it. We are all familiar with the difficulties bound up with the human search for truth, chief of which are scepticism, agnosticism, relativism and nihilism. Attempts are often made to convince people that we have reached the twilight of the age of certitude in the knowledge of truth, and that we are irrevocably condemned to the total absence of meaning, the provisional nature of all knowledge, and to permanent instability and relativity a being who by his very nature seeks the truth (cf. Fides et Ratio, 28) and cannot live without it. Contemporary scholarship, and especially present-day philosophy, each in its own sphere, needs to rediscover that sapiential dimension which consists in the search for the definitive and overall meaning of human existence.
The search for truth is carried on not only through the toil of individuals in libraries or laboratories, but it also has a community dimension. “Human perfection consists not simply in acquiring an abstract knowledge of the truth, but in a dynamic relationship of faithful self-giving with others. It is in this faithful self- giving that a person finds a fullness of certainty and security. At the same time, however, knowledge through belief, grounded as it is on trust between persons, is linked to truth: in the act of believing, men and women entrust themselves to the truth which the other declares to them” (Fides et Ratio, 32). This, certainly, is an experience which each of you appreciates. Truth is attained thanks also to others, in dialogue with others and on behalf of others. Seeking the truth and sharing it with others is an important service to society, a service which scholars in particular are called to render.

ADDRESS OF JOHN PAUL II

Thursday, 25 May 2000

Your Eminences,
Dear Brothers in the Episcopate and the Priesthood,
Dear Friends who represent the world of learning and research,

In past centuries, science, whose discoveries are fascinating, has held a dominant place and at times was considered the only criterion of truth or way to happiness. A reflection based exclusively on scientific elements tried to accustom us to a culture of suspicion and doubt. It refused to consider the existence of God or to view man in the mystery of his origin and his end, as if this perspective might call science itself into question. It sometimes saw God merely as a mental construct which would not stand up to scientific knowledge. These attitudes have estranged science from man and from the service it is called to offer him.
  1. Today “we face a great challenge … to move from phenomenon to foundation, a step as necessary as it is urgent. We cannot stop short at experience alone; … speculative thinking must penetrate to the spiritual core and the ground from which it rises” (Encyclical Fides et ratio, n. 83). Scientific research is also based on the capacity of the human mind to discover what is universal. This openness to knowledge leads to the ultimate and fundamental meaning of the human person in the world (cf. ibid., n. 81).
“The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork” (Ps 19:1); with these words the psalmist evokes the “silent account” of the Creator’s marvellous work inscribed in the reality of creation itself. Those involved in research are called in a certain way to have the same experience as the psalmist and to experience the same wonder. “One must aim at encouraging the human spirit to develop its faculties of wonder, of understanding, of contemplation, of forming personal judgements and cultivating a religious, moral and social sense” (Gaudium et spes, n. 59

By increasing his knowledge of the universe, and in particular of the human being, who is at its centre, man has a veiled perception, as it were, of the presence of God, a presence which he is able to discern in the “silent manuscript” written by the Creator in creation, the reflection of his glory and grandeur. God loves to make himself heard in the silence of creation, in which the intellect senses the transcendence of the Lord of Creation. Everyone who seeks to understand the secrets of creation and the mysteries of man must be ready to open their mind and heart to the deep truth which manifests itself there, and which “draws the intellect to give its consent” (St Albert the Great, Commentary on John, 6, 44).
4. The Church has a great esteem for scientific and technological research, since it “is a significant expression of man’s dominion over creation” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2293) and a service to truth, goodness and beauty. From Copernicus to Mendel, from Albert the Great to Pascal, from Galileo to Marconi, the history of the Church and the history of the sciences clearly show us that there is a scientific culture rooted in Christianity. It can be said, in fact, that research, by exploring the greatest and the smallest, contributes to the glory of God which is reflected in every part of the universe.

Faith is not afraid of reason. They “are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth - in a word, to know himself - so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves” (Encylical Fides et ratio, Proem). If in the past the separation of faith and reason was a tragedy for man, who risked losing his interior unity under the threat of an ever more fragmented knowledge, today your mission is to carry on your research with the conviction that “for the intelligent man … all things are in harmony and agreement” (Gregory Palamas, Theophanes).

I invite you, then, to ask the Lord to give you the gift of the Holy Spirit, since to love truth is to live on the Holy Spirit (cf. St Augustine, Sermo, 267, 4), who enables us to approach God and to call him in a loud voice: Abba, Father. May nothing prevent you from calling on him in this way, even if you are absorbed in the rigour of your analyses of the things he has set before our eyes.

Men and women of learning, be builders of hope for all humanity! May God accompany you and make fruitful your efforts at the service of genuine human progress. May Mary, Seat of Wisdom, protect you. May St Thomas Aquinas and the other holy men and women who, in various fields of learning have made a remarkable contribution to an ever deeper knowledge of created reality in the light of the divine mystery intercede for you.

Logos, you are a waste of time. You are the classic 2+2 = 3 Just read yourself

‘The M/M experiment has nottttthing to do with the motion of the Earth. The experiment used an already known fact (that the Earth MOVES) to test another theory,’

That sentence is a contradiction in terms. As you do not know the difference coherent debate with you is a waste of time.
Ok, sure, maybe I left out a word. Simply insert the word “proving” between “with” and “the” and my statement becomes completely accurate. And I’m sure, if you are so well-versed in “coherent debate,” as I am, according to you, not, that you could have figured that out for yourself. Since you did not, it leads me to believe that you have no desire in this coherent debate you profess to strive for. You did not respond to my argument, you simply attempt to object to my omission of a single word. If you would like to turn this into a grammatical or rhetorical exchange, I assure you I could hold my own. But since I believe evidentiary backing and strength of argument both are of more importance than rhetoric here, I have ignored any nonsensical word groupings you have put forth, and responded to the meat of your arguments. If you will not do the same for me, I will have to resort to a more dialectical mode of speaking.

The experiment termed “M & M” revolved around the hypothesis that a universal medium called the “Aether (Ether)” existed. The experiment used the speed of light to test the existent of the aforementioned concept. The result, as you admit, was both famous and completely null. Because the speed of light went unaltered, the medium was essentially disproved. This conclusion is stated directly in the peer-reviewed paper following the experiment. Light does not need a medium to travel through, thus a new model for the Universe was necessary. Years were spent in the dark until Einstein gave his two cents, with some prodding from others, that led to the Theory of Relativity.

In order to show that the Earth is stationary, you need much more than the M & M experiment. You would need to prove that the Aether exists first to even use the null result you are trumpeting, and then disprove the entire foundation of cosmology and many other scientific fields. If you wish to do so, start now: It’s gonna take a while.

And, as another poster noted, your last post does nothing to help your argument, standing, or intellectual integrity. You failed to provide any form of argument, insulted me, and attempted to put yourself on a lofty intellectual pedestal which simply does not exist. I’m a “2+2=3” type of person? I would beg to differ.

Now you logos: My post was in reply to

’My wife is a geologist, believe me the world was not created around 7000BC’ put up by Fox

If you were really interested in intelligent debate you should have replied to Fox’s post not mine.
One of the biggest problems I have had with this forum in the past is, that if you have an unpopular viewpoint, you end up discussing different topics with many different people at the same time, ultimately ending in too much confusion to keep up. If you take a look, I have responded to very few posters, and I believe ignored the majority posting in this thread. Right now my discussion is with you, and you alone.
Then you say 'Sorry, but authority means nothing here.’
What does that mean Logos?
This means that in a scientific discussion, the authority both you and Fox speak of hold no sway: only evidence and experiment.

Hey pal, you are going way out of bounds and becoming downright nasty, you need to try

Julia, ’ we mustn’t get our panties in a twist’ now must we? Logos is a big boy, well able to answer for himself.

OK Logos, you deserve a reply after that.
‘If you would like to turn this into a grammatical or rhetorical exchange, I assure you I could hold my own.’
No logos, that is the last thing I would criticise anybody for and I dare say you could hold your own.
'And I’m sure, if you are so well-versed in “coherent debate,” as I am, according to you, not, that you could have figured that out for yourself. ’
I did not figure that missing word out, I simply reacted to the contradictary reasoning of it as ‘an already known fact (that the Earth MOVES) to test another theory,’ (that showed the earth back might not be moving after all.) 2+2=3 mentality.
Yes, I know the M&M experiment was a scientific experiment trying to detect ether by use of the earth’s supposed motion through space at 67.000 mph as it supposedly orbits the sun. I know its purpose was not to prove or not that the earth flies through space faster than a bullet, that as you said WAS TAKEN FOR GRANTED AS PROVEN.

Now I contend that nobody has ever proven the earth moves through space, it is impossible to prove that. All science can do is FALSIFY any so called proofs for G or H.
In any scientific experiment that does not produce the required or expected results, ALL OPTIONS AS TO WHY IT DID NOT SHOUD BE CONSIDERED AS VALID UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE.

Let me put up your corrected statement again
‘The M/M experiment has nottttthing to do with PROVING the motion of the Earth. The experiment used an already known fact (that the Earth MOVES) to test another theory,’

Now here is what I said when introducing the M&M experiment.
And please Logos, I know science is ideologically driven in this area and of course they would never concede to a possible universal flood. Ever heard of the M & M experiment that showed the earth does not orbit the sun? Do you think they accepted this science> Not on your Nelly. They preferred to accept Einstein’s ABSURD Special theory of Relativity instead.

If you read me again see i do not say the M&M experiment proved the earth is fixed. I said it was an experiment that showed the earth does not orbit the sun.
and 'True science are the results of the Airy experiment and the Mitchelton & Morely experiments that were the only two scientific experiments ever conducted to determine the relative movements of the sun, earth and stars. These scientific experiments indicated the earth is fixed, not the sun and stars…
The Airy was directly testing the relative movement of the earth and stars, the M&M looking for ether by way of the movement of the earth around the sun.
Why I even gave you an example of one recognition of this valid conclusion quoting one famous science and science fiction writer:
‘There had to be an explanation [for the Airy and M/M test results that could not find evidence for a 30kms/s movement]. Either [it showed] the earth was motionless with respect to the ether, or [it showed] the earth dragged the ether with it, or something.

Note it was a Copernican who calls it a ‘failure’ and who concludedit was ‘highly unlikely’ that it showed a fixed earth. Yet a non moving earth is a perfectly valid scientific conclusion?
But NO, it was highly unlikely on ideological grounds, not scientific, a 2+2=3 mentality.

Asimov here repeats what the scientists and physicists of 1887 to 1905 HAD TO CONSIDER AS A SCIENTIFIC POSSIBILITY. And the revoluition came from Einstein the GOD of Copernicans. What did he do? HE ANNOUNCED, LIKE GOD, THAT ETHER DID NOT EXIST. That’s how they got the earth moving again.
