Many charities funded under the banner of social justice are the ones promoting political ideology and doing it through the legislative process. They may help to provide clean water while simultaneously promoting “reproductive health” and we well know what that means. Look at the expose of recent funding to CARE via CRS and the lame argument over what is fungible or not. And then there is the little matter of the latest Motu Proprio issued late last year in which the Pope said, “The Church’s charitable activity at all levels must avoid the risk of becoming just another form of organized social assistance,” and further that bishops must ensure that charitable agencies that pursue ends contrary to Church teaching not be funded. You may individually donate to these charities if your conscience allows - mine is not quite so free, nor am I inclined to dismiss certain connections that glaringly point to agenda-driven goals such as the creation theme which may take a sharp left turn into promoting aspects of the radical green movement.I’ll take another charity as an example. Water.org is a charity that helps get clean water to places in Africa and Asia through actions like micro-loans to people. It was co-founded by Matt Damon (the actor), who is apparently an Obama supporter. Does that mean you can’t support this charity, even though the only thing it actually does is help people in 3rd World Countries get access to clean water?
That’s the problem with such logic. Charities (the good ones) are set up to do certain actions, not to advance political points of supporters.
I’m all for environmental consciousness as long as we remember the entire doctrine of creation, not just that God created, but that He cares for His creation and mankind through Divine Providence. I’m not going to support the “Gospel According to the Earth” and the WWF has me suspicious. We are called to be fruitful and multiply yet this seems to be the nemeses of anything relating to environmentalism (referring to my previous post that Planned Parenthood is the recipient of so much funding.) Odd, huh?
