PhilVaz,

You wrote: “I read through it, and I mostly agree. Except the author doesn’t seem to believe in God with the “creator of a creator” idea.”

Yes, the author is an Objectivist and so is very much an atheist.

Mark L. Chance,

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut. Yes, mischaracterization is a hallmark of Objectivism, which is the “philosophy” that the author of this article adheres to. They are quite good at erecting straw men and bravely knocking them down—I have found this in many areas, but I didn’t know enough about this topic to venture an opinion. It does inspire me to read more on the topic—any particular books you’d recommend?

Mischaracterization is, all too often, the hallmark of anyone who objects to theistic belief. It is, after all, about all such people have to stand on.

As to a reading list, Michael Behe and William Dembski are good, but Behe’s earlier work (such as Darwin’s Black Box [if recall that title correctly]) is a bit flawed. His later work is more substantive. Also be warned: Dembski’s mathematics are not for the light of heart. I must confess his math is basically completely over my head, but I know enough about science, logic, and philosophy to follow the rest of his arguments.

Also, check out Phillip (with two Ls) Johnson. He is not a scientist, but his critiques of the methodology of Darwinists is often devastating. Finally, back issues of First Things are available online, and sometimes have cogent articles written by people on both sides of the intelligent design debate.
