No one understands how the mind and brain are related but unless you are a materialist or an idealist they must be and their interaction implies that ID must be science to some extent.
The onus is on you to equate the mind with the brain or vice versa.
All animals have a self-preservation instinct from the instant they appear. They are unaware of it but it is a goal nevertheless.
My current goal is to finish this sentence, but that doesn’t mean I evolved with the goal of finishing this sentence.
I evolved with a goal-making ability.
So our goals and the goals of other forms of life throw no light whatsoever on God’s goals? We can know nothing whatsoever about God from what occurs in the world?
We can know some aspects of God…

That is the contention of the Design argument!
… but I’m still saying that whatever goals He had and has, people interpret the evidence differently and no one knows the mind of God.
I agree.
It is quite unnecessary to draw up millions of designs for every species and subspecies. The information system we call DNA is quite adequate for that task.
DNA is how it’s encoded, but it’s necessary for the intelligent agent to (name removed by moderator)ut the design, otherwise it/she/he is out of a job. There are millions of species, millions of designs. Doesn’t each require the intelligent agent to draw up a separate design brief?
That is the role of the laws of nature.
If you think the universe is not immensely complex with countless coincidences you must regard it as a supermarket with only one product!
Ah, here I’d tend to call these countless coincidences natural phenomena.

They are generally due to the interplay of the laws of nature but the immense complexity of the universe necessitates divine intervention.
Why and how do they join and succeed in becoming photoreceptive? By sheer Chance?
They join because given the right conditions they can’t help themselves.

The right conditions presuppose Design.
In the same way, rocks form into a sphere when there’s sufficient mass, and we call them planets. They do it naturally because it’s in their nature, not because an intelligent agent designs planets.
An orderly universe points to Design
We had a dog I named Chance, because he gave me a chance. Christ also gave me a chance, but ID, developed I guess to support belief, requires we talk about photoreceptors instead of the gospel. Funny old world.
Christ’s teaching about sparrows and Providence in the Gospels covers photoreceptors!
Your recapitulation of Dawkins has the same radical flaw: the assumption that given enough time anything is possible. Not only are particles prior to persons they are also their progenitors! You use your mind to prove you are mindless!!!
No, what we see is possible, what we don’t see may never be possible.

Being possible does not entail being probable or even highly probable.
Even given the entire life-span of the universe, a shattered glass is highly unlikely to spontaneously reform. There’s nothing in the laws of physics to say it can’t, it’s just incredibly unlikely. On the other hand, given an ocean containing zillions of proteins and a few thousands of years, some combine, you can’t stop the little fellers. Given quite a while longer, we get to have brains.
Your faith in the power of Chance is touching but it doesn’t correspond to what Jesus told us about our loving Father in heaven.
Not supernatural thingumabobs. Cast off this dualism bro, set yourself free!
Not natural thingumabobs. Cast off your monism bro, and set yourself free from the slavery of material determinism!

Tonrey, the onus is no you to show that the mind is independent of the brain. As soon as you show us a mind that is not associated with a brain, you will have a stronger case. Now, go out and find a couple of them! Photographic evidence preferred.

“show” is an absurd request given that the mind is intangible. Do you **really **believe only tangible things dependent on the brain exist? If so you rule out the existence of God, spirits, truth, goodness, beauty, freedom, justice, equality, human rights and love…

No, of course I do not rule these things out. But you have not shown us any minds that are not associated with brains. All the minds I know – mine, my friends’ , my cat’s – they are all associated with a brain. When I meet a mind not so associated, you can bet I’ll be the first to contact the Nobel Prize committee.,

FYI – my comment “photographic evidence preferred” was not intended seriously.

If an intangible reality like truth does not depend on the brain why should an intangible reality like the mind depend on the brain? Doesn’t the brain ever depend on the mind? Do you believe spirits such as angels are mindless? Or that the mind ceases to exist when the brain is destroyed?

(1) Truth may not depend on my brain, but truth cannot be perceived apart from some brain/mind to do the perceiving.

(2) I don’t know – I’ve never met an angel.

(3) I have yet to meet a mind whose brain has been destroyed. I’ll alert you when I do.

Will reply later on the rest of your post, but just on this - why would we completely ignore all evidence and common sense to go instead with the most arcane and improbable explanations?

For instance, the writer of the hundred-year old Original Catholic Encyclopedia article clings to this wretched dualist affliction when clearly he was having a hard time not admitting it had already had its day. At one point he sets up an extraordinary silly straw man in the hope we won’t notice he has no idea how to explain the mind:

According to W. K. Clifford, who invented the term “mind-stuff”, those who accept evolution must, for the sake of consistency, assume that there is attached to every particle of matter in the universe a bit of rudimentary feeling or intelligence, and "when the material molecules are so combined as to form the film on the under-side of a jelly fish, the elements of mind-stuff which go along with them are so combined as to form the faint beginnings of sentience. - newadvent.org/cathen/10321a.htm :rotfl:

To summarize: Rain comes out of holes in the sky, it does, it does, it really does, prove it don’t.

By no means an absurd request bro. MRI scanners show brain activity related to truth, goodness, beauty, freedom, justice, equality, human rights and love.

What you are referring to is Cartesian extreme dualism which is not Catholicism.

From what I have read, it seems to me that the goal was to identify the location of brain activity in response to some form of stimulation. The stimulation would be specific for test purposes and not conceptual. Dang, I can’t remember the exact wording,…

Why didn’t you write “apart from some brain to do the perceiving”
(2) I don’t know – I’ve never met an angel.
So you have no idea whether an angel can think?

Do you believe only in **things **you have met?

Material evidence? Is that the only evidence you recognise? You are begging the question with the phrase “the most arcane and improbable explanations”.

Irrelevant.

How?

How do you reconcile that view with the activity of angels in the Bible?
Good question: how do “minds” without bodies act in the world?
What do you believe in that you haven’t met?
Depending on how you define “met,” nothing.

“Mind” -
[1913 Webster]
  1. The intellectual or rational faculty in man; the
understanding; the intellect; the power that conceives,
judges, or reasons;** also, the entire spiritual nature; the
soul**; – often in distinction from the body.
StA - you think that souls cannot exist without a body?

That’s a very interesting question, ricmat. If “soul” is the “substantial form” of the body, it makes little sense to think of it as existing apart from body. just as it makes little sense to think of the form of “table” as existing apart from the material of a table. The “life of the world to come” will no doubt be embodied, rather than composed of disembodied souls sitting on ideas of chars and playing ideas of harps. But I could be surprised!

It is my understanding that the teaching of the church is that in the period after our own personal judgement, but prior to the last judgement (and re-embodiment), that our souls continue to exist. They are immortal, after all. They don’t disappear and then come back only after we have bodies.

Certainly we perceive truth in this interim period, even though we don’t have bodies. Does one need a body to perceive God?

Angels don’t have bodies (and you’re not sure if they think or not). Can they perceive God?

As you know, I’m not a dualist.
