Credentials for becoming a Catholic counselor

Ever since my brain surgery I have always wanted to help people in the same way that I needed help. Thus, I longed to be a neurosurgeon or somewhere in the field of neurology. Then, during the surgical process I found Christ, as life and death were two subjects always on my mind.

As I started thinking about it, I could help people medically, by fixing them and saving their lives. But, I believe the Holy Spirit has guided my thoughts to start believing that people are saved in different ways. And thus, I should be helping people’s character, belief systems, and morality. I should not only help people in this life, but also preparing them for the next.

I’m a junior in high school, and I would like to know as college comes closer: what education credentials are required for becoming a counselor or therapist of religion. In this profession, I could talk with struggling/depressed individuals and help them come out of it through Christ, our Lord.

there are also some schools that offer a major or concentration in just that field, pastoral counselling, with basic courses in psychology etc, and specialization to that direction. my cousin has such a degree. it should probably be from a college whose faith basis matches your own.
 
There is a Catholic counselor, Gregory Popcak, who has a good call-in program on Catholic radio. He also has a website catholiccounselors.org/ . You might want to contact him and ask him to give you some recommendations on education programs that would meet your needs.
 
I am a Catholic counselor. I have a BA in Psychology and an MS in Pastoral Counseling, both from a Catholic college. Many colleges are now offering a Pastoral Counseling degree. In every state, you need a Master’s degree in counseling, or psychology, or socal work to get a license. I have a Licensed Professional Counselor license from NJ. I work for a community mental health center doing outpatient counseling. I do Pastoral counseling when the client requests faith -based counseling, and some do. My training included theology and Scripture as well as the counseling classes.
