Does anyone know the credentials of Taylor Marshall to call himself a “theologian” or to purport to speak as one? From what I can tell, he has a doctorate in philosophy from a secular institution in Texas. Yet he seems to hold himself out as knowing all things Catholic history/philosophy/spirituality/theology/etc. And he is making big money on being a go-to Catholic “guru.” That is, he seems to be a “professional Catholic.” Again, what are his actual credentials that would qualify him to speak with such authority?

To be fair to Dr Marshall, this is your characterization of him. If you can point to him doing this, then we can have a discussion. Otherwise, this is just a setup to bash him in an unproductive way.

He was a priest in the Episcopal church so he certainly has been thru seminary

Welcome to CAF. I hope you find it interesting and informative.

Looks as if undergrad was at a secular school.
Yes, in fact, my secular school which has the largest Newman center in the country. We’re rather famous.

The only thing an Aggie Catholic is prouder of than being an Aggie is being a Catholic. Whoop!

He’s not a theologian. He’s not an apologist. He’s a philosopher. Do you have a specific reference to him calling himself anything other than that?

I see that you’re new here. Prepare for the wrath that is to come. (Taylor Marshall threads never end well).

He’s being talked about so much due to a recent controversy. It’s admittedly getting old.

Doesn’t this cut both ways? AKA if you don’t like threads about him keep scrolling?

Umm…seriously? It doesn’t take much research to find

See his New Saint Thomas Institute website, among other marketing materials.

“Dr. Taylor Marshall is a Catholic professor, lecturer, and leading scholar in Saint Thomas Aquinas and orthodox Catholic education…”

"For those who are committed to learning the general arc of Catholic Theology, from the Trinity to the Sacraments, there is even an opportunity to earn a Certificate in Theology…You get new theological instruction every week covering a topic that is crucial to your growth as a Catholic…Topics like St Thomas Aquinas, Virgin Mary, St Augustine, St Paul and How to Answer Atheists.

Know that I have serious reservations about Marshall. And I think he believes himself to be an expert in most matters where really only religious actually are. But I’ve also heard him state in at least one video that he isn’t a theologian but a philosopher. So I’m just asking if you can point to an instance where he claims to be either a theologian or an apologist.

See New Saint Thomas Institute website:

“DR. TAYLOR MARSHALL IN 7 POINTS
Dr. Taylor Marshall is a Catholic professor, lecturer, and leading scholar in Saint Thomas Aquinas and orthodox Catholic education.
In 2011, Dr. Marshall was invited to the Vatican to participate in the Pontificium Consilium de Communicationibus Socialibus.
Author of four books, numerous articles, and appears regularly on radio and television.
His website receives over 1.2 million visits per year with over 50,000 total subscribers.
His Ph.D. dissertation was “Thomas Aquinas on Natural Law and the Twofold Beatitude of Humanity.”
He launched the New Saint Thomas Institute in 2013 to bring advanced, fun, and affordable theology classes to all six inhabited continents.
Taylor and his wife Joy make their home in Irving, Texas with their seven children.”

Don’t get me wrong, he seems like a very nice guy. I am just always leery of people who make their living as a professional Catholic…unless they are truly credentialed to be such. Doctorates these days are a dime a dozen, no offense.

Philosopher or theologian, Taylor Marshall is one of the few writers I’ve come across that’s convinced me atheism is rational. Infiltration ended with that as an option and I thought that was the only rational response to all he wrote.

I know a few alumni from the University of Dallas. It’s a pretty rigorous school. It’s interesting to me that people seem to just dismiss academic credentials out of hand.

With all due respect Father, to quote a favorite writer of mine (I believe), “some of the dumbest people I’ve ever met had PhDs on their walls.”

Again, he is the principal instructor of a theological institute that hands out certificates in theology. I would think he would have to be a theologian to be able to confer certificates in theology, no? I am not as familiar with him as some seem to be, hence my question. If he has all the requisite credentials, then that is fine. But I just can’t find anything. I’m not trying to be divisive; I just have a lot of friends that are reading his “Infiltration” book, which got me interested in him.
