Cremation and the Church

I know this seems like an odd question, but if your body is cremated, can you arrange to have the ashes left at Church? Wouldn’t it be beautiful to have your human remains always in the presence of the Eucharist? 🙂

Honestly, why not turn some of the basement space underneath a Church into a respository for cremated remains? I was thinking the other day how some people want their ashes scattered here, there and everywhere or left with certain relatives…but I was thinking the only place I would want my cremated remains left is in a Church.

I know it seems like an odd question and maybe it is an honor only reserved for the highest saints-if you think about it their remains have been left in Church and near the tabernacle until the Day of Resurrection. (Of course, it is their uncreamated remains) What an incredible blessing!
 
One may not scatter cremated remains. The Church requires that they be interred. They can be buried in a cemetery plot or in a columbarium. Some columbaria are indeed inside of churches, or in underground vaults. Others are on church or cemetery grounds.
 
There may be health regulations that prevent remains from being interred within a church building or the sanctuary. And as 1ke said, Catholics are not to scatter human remains. We are to treat the cremated body as respectfully as we would an intact body.

Anyway, our souls will be with Jesus, so we wouldn’t need the Eucharist in the same way.

Once upon a time people started using cremation as a means to deny people heaven. It was the same faulty logic used when people were drawn and quartered and buried at separate places to thwart the resurrection. It doesn’t actually work like that, but because the church knows its the thought that counts cremation was banned. That ban was later lifted, however it is still discouraged, and it is still a sin to use cremation as a denial of the resurrection.
