Cremation

Mormon leaders with whom I spoke in the 1950s and 1960s strongly opposed cremation. One suggestion, believe it or not, was that it was easier to resurrect a body that had not been cremated. That reluctance to view cremation as other than ill-thought changed with some statements in the 1970s, or perhaps the leaders I spoke with were speaking from regional and cultural bias rather than repeating what they had been taught by their leaders. Now, according to lds.org, cremation is acceptable, although the tone of the articles I read seemed to me to imply that burial was preferable.

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe in a spiritual resurrection; they do not believe in a physical resurrection. Cremation is not an issue with them. The June 2014 *Watchtower * instructed “Scriptures do not present any basic objection to the practice of cremation…Whether a dead person is cremated or not, Jehovah is not limited in his ability to restore the person to life with a new body.”

Some New Religious Movements, like the Unification Church, believe the physical body is itself holy, should be treated with respect (similar to how Mormons used to believe), and that burial is preferred over cremation. I have a number of Unification Church friends, including some who have passed away, and none of them were or have plans to be cremated.
