I’ve been watching the tv show Criminal Minds for awhile. It’s about the FBI’s Behavior Analysis Unit team tracking down serial killers. Yes, this show is bizarre and can sometimes be violent but it has a certain formula to it that makes it often watchable. However, the latest episode this week was about a serial killer who was a repressed gay man who goes on a killing spree against both male sex partners and females that he tries to force himself to be attracted to…I know, it sounds very depressing and believe me it was but for a different reason altogether. It turns out that this guy went to a stereotyped conversion therapy camp that utilizes dangerous methods that end up hurting the participants in general and is portrayed as being directly responsible for this serial killers murderous ways. In short, this episode was the most disgusting, blatent piece of propaganda against those seeking to voluntarily and legitimately undergo reparative therapy that I’ve ever seen (BTW, it’s already illegal to do reparative therapy in California). The scenes showing the methods at the conversion therapy camp were so over the top that you’d think it was a spoof or skit on Saturday Night Live. It would be hilarious but then you realize that whoever wrote this junk was dead serious and had deliberately intended to portray this stuff in the way it did to garner an emotional reaction from the audience. The actors playing the FBI agents recited lines that were intended to shame and make the people who run this camp as dangerous, sick and zealous crazies and of course they were in the cartoonish way they were portrayed. One of the last scenes shows the FBI raiding the camp and breaking down locked doors with rooms that are lined with presumably gay teenage boys strapped into chairs, medicated and being forced to watch heterosexual pornography. Of course, the FBI agents free these teenagers from their nightmare and the moral of the story is meant to be that anyone who thinks people shouldn’t act out their same-sex attraction is the equivilent of these crazies running the conversion therapy camp. I couldn’t believe that this type of blatent propaganda is not only allowed but accepted on tv (it reminded me of that unintentionally funny movie from the 1950’s portraying the dangers of pot). I had noticed that this tv show had done a couple of other gay themed story lines that were also over the top sympathetic to the gay agenda but not at this level. I believe all this stuff is just a precursor to the coming persecution of people of faith (ex., faithful Catholics) who believe in the truth about God’s design for human sexuality. Did anyone else see this!!! Did you have the same reaction as I did?

Riley, there was a thread recently where some of the methods of these “treatments” were brought up. The methods included stripping, sexual shaming, pornography, verbal abuse and more. It doesn’t get more over the top than that.

There is no way to justify the use of pornography and abuse, no matter what the goal is. As it says in the catechism, the ends do not justify the means.
Of course, with tactics like that, the results will probably just be further psychological harm anyway.

BTW, while I do find these “therapies” to be pseudo-science (as does the APA), I did not wish to imply that they all use extreme and immoral methods. My point was simply that such a storyline is not necessary off the wall, considering some of them have employed the methods I mentioned.

In an attempt to temper the two extremes: Yes, there are indeed some religious-oriented therapies that have used such awful, immoral means to reverse a person’s sexual orientation. As Catholics, we get defensive, feel accused, and wish to deny this can happen. But it does happen.

On the other hand, there are men and women who have “reversed” their sexual orientation through a sane and educated therapeutic process. Not all reversals have stayed reversed, but this process is held to high criticism as well, as you are observing.

Many of the homosexuals I have met have said, “If this were a lifestyle choice, don’t you think I would have chosen otherwise?..It’s not an easy life.” I believe there are some who appear born to a homosexual-type sexual orientation, some who have been harmed in a way that has led them to a homosexual orientation, and some, who for some reason, actually choose it (especially in our present environment where young people are actually encouraged to experiment.) I’m not a pro but perhaps some therapies can work, based on the second and third reason but not the first? Incidentally, I am talking here about orientation, not actual behavior.

There are legitimate forms of reparative therapy that don’t use any of those primitive methods depicted in the show and thousands of men and women have been helped (and they did it voluntarily). Go to NARTH website and see research for yourself. The show portrayed the worst of the worst type of Clockwork Orange therapies and put them all together in one big soup in a deliberate attempt to show how crazy reparative therapy is. They had characters on the show spouting lines that were so one-sided that you couldn’t come to any other conclusion but that any therapy to treat same-sex attraction is dangerous and might cause someone to go off the deep end and in extreme cases become a serial killer…it’s incredibly misleading. The characters who ran the camp were one-dimensional, evil and not nuanced in the least bit to get their point across which is this: any suggestion that any therapy might help with same-sex attraction is unacceptable and you will be severely punished for even thinking it. It’s another way the gay agenda has shown their own incredible intolerance and they’ll go to any length to stamp out dissenters of their cause. One of the FBI characters even uses a Bible verse from John at the end of the show to promote a notion that God finds same-sex behavior acceptable and it shouldn’t even be an issue. It’s frustrating and the MSM is a willing participant in this propaganda.
