Whenever we talk about prayer books on this forum the Jordanville Prayerbook is among the most popular.

Today the ROCOR put out a video about the crises in the physical plant at the Holy Trinity Monastery at Jordanville, where this treasure of prayers comes from.

Please watch the video.

Please pray for the monks and seminarians at Jordanville. If you’re in a position to help financially the contact information for that is at the end of the video.

We of course wish the Monastery. But please note that it would be improper for Catholics to contribute to the financial needs of the Orthodox Church or any other non-Catholic church. Would it be proper to contribute to the needs of a Lutheran or Baptish church ? I don’t think so. 👍

You’re absolutely right. As a matter of fact, ROCOR believes we are heretics and generally rebaptize Catholics. I wish them well, but couldn’t in good conscience donate to people who have such views of Catholics.

Funny, but Eparch Gerald of Phoenix allowed for a special collection to aid non-catholic parishes. As has Archbishop Schweitz of Anchorage, and before him, Archbishop Hurley and Archbishop Ryan.

There is no sin in helping others. Only in endorsing their errors. The giving should be done quietly, not with great ceremony.

Further, the Orthodox are valid and licit, despite being in schism - they are not culpable for their schism, however, having (mostly) been born into it. The hieromonks and hierodeacons are valid priests and deacons, the monks validly and licitly under solemn vows, and to help them when one can is a corporal act of mercy.

They are as close to Catholic as one can be without accepting the Pope. And canonically more licit than some Catholic organizations.

It also is an act of ecumenical witness to aid these brothers in Christ. Sure, they’re blind to the validity of the Catholics… now… but every nickel is a sign that we are brothers and sisters in Christ with them.

Should we give as much as we would our home parish? Probably not. But a collection given freely would not in any way hurt.

Remember - the Corporal Works of Mercy are NOT restricted to Catholics… we are supposed to practice them with all mankind, even our persecutors.

👍

Not to mention that merely purchasing the Jordanville Prayer Book supports the monastery. Is it only okay to give them money if you get something out of it? 🙂

Strongly disagree. Charity does not require we build and repair their churches. If they needed food or shelter or something along those lines, that would be different. 👍

👍 And my check is on its way.
My parish, like many Greek Catholic parishes, relies heavily on Orthodox resources from books, to seminars, to liturgical services. Several of our choir members sing periodically with the choir of an Orthodox Cathedral here for Vespers. We go to Vespers in Orthodox parishes when our parish isn’t serving them. We’ve walked with them in the Walk for Life. When we needed a new Apostal in Slavonic the local OCA priest referred us to his Reader who searched it out and procured for us what we needed. I confer with their vestment repairer when I need help and I’ve helped her locate materials for their repairs. The local ROCOR bishop invited the Dominican novices to meet with him after a recent Festal Vigil. His Subdeacon went to their priory to talk about Mt Athos, and returned at a later date for dinner and discussion with the novices. I could go on but my point is simply that we have close relationships with Orthodox of various jurisdictions. We’re a family with deep estrangements and deep ties.
