Hi there,

I need some spiritual advice or comfort.

I had an on-and off relationship with a very good friend of mine for a while; the timing just never felt quite right, but God kept putting us in each others’ lives and every time I’d pray about it, I would get the answer, “Yes, he’s your vocation, just not yet.” The last time we ended things earlier this year, I made up my mind to get over it once and for all–I broke off the friendship and started the healing process. One day, when I was particularly distraught, I prayed a rosary for the intention of just.moving.on. At the end, there was a small voice that said, “He’s being prepared for you. Live for me right now.” (“He” was very clearly this friend.) And then with that came the most intense feeling of peace I’d ever had: I went almost instantaneously from crying to singing a psalm and dancing for joy. I didn’t want that answer: what I was hoping for was for my heart to start healing, and if God so chose, a very firm, “Nope, not yours” so that I could move on with my life. I got the exact opposite, and with that consolation in mind I very firmly set about chasing after God’s will for my life with no doubts, perfectly confident that when the time was right this friend would come back into my life.

Over the last few months, I’ve been making new friends, starting new hobbies, and going on dates with other men (being over the relationship was, for me, part of what “Live for me right now” meant). I have been moved in prayer about completely different things to pray for him and even to reach out twice (not with any heartfelt plea, and with at least a few days of having that desire to contact him to make sure it wasn’t just an impulse or motivated by loneliness), but I’ve also been moving on with my life.

Except, he started dating someone right after I prayed that significant rosary, and now he’s proposed to her and I’m in spiritual crisis. Was my interpretation completely wrong? If so, if I’m that terrible at discerning spirits, how do I ever trust my prayer again? Any advice or comfort would be appreciated; I know how to move on from a relationship, but not from a spiritual crisis like this.

He very well might be the one for you, Gods answer to prayer sometimes if not often are not the ones we want. If God told you to just live for him then how you do that is devote yourself to God, seek him out daily never stop praying and loving and learn to surrender your will to his. If you seek God and seek Love then everything else falls into place. Trust me when I say most things are not what they seem, this person may be wanting to marry this person but things dont always go as planned, as hard as it it release all that fear and worry and trust God

Thank you for the response! I started a novena to Mary, Undoer of Knots this morning, for her intercession in the untangling of my heart. It brought me much peace and patience in waiting for God’s answer. I am struggling the most with the voice and the knowledge that it was very clearly this friend in my prayer, because it doesn’t seem to make sense. But with God all things are possible. I came across the story of Elisabeth Leseur, Servant of God, last night, who prophesied her husband’s future vocation to the priesthood, and taking great comfort that God works in the heart in mysterious ways!

If you deeply love him and want to marry him, wait for him. If you don’t think he is the right one for you, then forget about him as best as you can. Don’t go by a feeling that you have – go by your reason enlightened by faith. If he will bring you and your children to heaven with him, then he would be good to wait for. If he would not make that good of a husband and father, then please try to forget about him and let your soul be at peace. God bless you.

Thank you, ready. I am waiting until the end of the novena at the very least before I’m ready to listen again, but either way my heart will be at peace. For right now, I’m just resting in the Spirit. God bless!
