I’ve been reading about the Biblia Hebraica Quinta (BH5), which is an upcoming critical edition of the Hebrew Scriptures in the original Hebrew and Aramaic. Reading the differences between the new version and the old version, I’m struck by just how different the critical apparatus of the old Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (and possibly the BH5) seems from the critical apparatus of the Tischendorf, Westcott and Hort, or Nestle-Aland versions of the Greek New Testament.
The Nestle-Aland, for example, gives a preferred reading, and then gives the variants in a footnote, describing which is most likely to be accurate and why. The BHS seems to give the Leningrad Codex reading, and then has footnotes describing variants that are presented uncritically.
Am I wrong, or is there a large difference between the style of OT textual criticism and NT textual criticism? If I’m not wrong, is there a reason for this or possibly a way to adjust for it so that my understanding of the textual criticism of the OT becomes clearer?
