Someone gave me a cross neckless for my birthday- not a crucifix. It’s centimental to me and I therefore wonder, is it o.k. to were the cross rather than go get a crucifix- I want to be theologically correct here.

Sure, why not? Nothing wrong with it. At the end of my RCIA group, we were each given a dooen cross hand-carved by one of the parishioners who was also my RCIA sponsor. I will add that it is the only cross I have, all the rest are crucifixes.
As for jewelry, (I am a man) I wear simple silver chain with a silver Miraculous medal as three smaller bronze medals of the Holy Face, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Seven Sorrows of Mary.
We were given similar simple crosses during RCIA before the 1st discernment. Ours hang from the mirror in our cars at just the right height to grab while begging for forgiveness in traffic.
