Canon 29, Second Lateran Council. It banned bows and Crossbows from being used on Christians.

I’ve probably asked before, but I just would like a refresher, but is this still binding today? Or would it have been overturned, nullified, etc.? I don’t know if it was or wasn’t, but if it wasn’t included in the most recent Code of Canon Law, is it still in effect?

Just curious!

I think it might matter as a backdoor argument for gun control.

The decree is about using a bow or a crossbow against Christians and Catholics. Are you planning to start using this implements against Christians, Catholics? Other religions perhaps?
Being used ON not BY…

Canon 29, Second Lateran Council. It banned bows and Crossbows from being used on Christians.
Would that the Fathers of Ecumenical Councils had had the courage to ban the use of all weapons by anybody against anybody .

But the Gospel is compromised again and again .

I believe I’ve now seen all the most whimsical threads on these here forums. Gloriosky!

Not as much as I would like to @(name removed by moderator) . It’s all part of growing old .:roll_eyes:

A man in a nursing home told me once that he got about five hours sleep each night . I thought how rotten for him .

I’m in the same boat now , but you adjust to it .

Nope. Just curious. I didn’t read the replies carefully last time, and quite honestly forgot the answer. I looked on an existing thread, and there was only one answer to the question that I saw. So, do you know the answer? I really am just curious.

No one. No one at all, actually. As I said, Im just curious, as I mostly forgot about the answers from my last post.

I am just curious! I forgot the first answer, and there is only one answer on a related thread, so I wanted to check.

Not far. I just heard about it somewhere (it was actually in a video I was watching one time, about medieval history) and I looked into it more, found a related CA thread, and only saw one answer as to whether or not it is still in effect.

Look, I really am just curious on the subject. I forgot the first set of answers, and only saw one answer on a related thread. I do not plan to use a crossbow, bow, or even knife or gun violently against Catholics, Non-Catholic Christians, people of other religions, or people with none.

Do you know the answer? I am just curious and have no bad intentions.

I’m not sure if the ban on members of the Church shooting each other with crossbows is still technically in effect, or just merely been replaced with a ban on shooting each other in general.

In answer to the canonical part of your question, from the 1983 Code:
Can. 6 §1. When this Code takes force, the following are abrogated:
1º the Code of Canon Law promulgated in 1917;
2º other universal or particular laws contrary to the prescripts of this Code unless other provision is expressly made for particular laws;
3º any universal or particular penal laws whatsoever issued by the Apostolic See unless they are contained in this Code;
4º other universal disciplinary laws regarding matter which this Code completely reorders.
§2. Insofar as they repeat former law, the canons of this Code must be assessed also in accord with canonical tradition.
But also, use common sense. Why on earth would a nearly 1000 year old ban on crossbows be necessary anymore? Why was it historically necessary, and are those conditions still present?

Just curious–if the crossbow is still banned, is the arquebus as well? Asking for a friend.
